What do you want from government?

I want a government that puts the majority ahead of the minority. Prioritise the workers, not the business owners. Make outcomes and service satisfaction of health, education, rail, police etc the key metrics and not profit. Prioritise the people of this country first by offering better education and training so everyone can have a good career if they want it.

Transparency is key. I want better messaging around things like inflation, wage growth etc. Stop using % change and start using indexes. It's far too easy for governments t say "look inflation has gone down" instead of saying "prices are still rising and they are x more than they were last year, than 5 years ago, 10 years ago etc". It really holds them to account when you compare wage growth as well because it's very easy to see with an index whether wages are keeping up with inflation. They get away with inflation-busting payrises of 1% above inflation but people don't understand that it goes nowhere close to matching what they should have been getting for several years. I want better messaging on per capita spend as well. It's no good telling us GDP or whatever has risen by 1% if the population has increased by 1%. We need inflation-adjusted per capita spend (at every level, local as well as national).

It's telling/depressing that the unelected upper chamber, including hereditary peers, bishops and idiots appointed by PMs as a pat on the back, as a whole seem more measured and sensible than the elected chamber.

Obviously the tories have gone down the route of selecting people to stand as MPs based on ideology rather than intelligence, experience or capability which doesn't help.

In the past I might not have agreed with tory policies, but they at least had enough relatively competent MPs to call on to fill cabinet positions.
Good post, I often wonder what ticks the selectors boxes, it isn't a high bar now in the majority of cases by the looks.
Yet when you listen to and see the likes of Lord Arbuthnot operate, a man from a very privileged background, but has a dignity, integrity and sincerity in spadesful.

Peace.

Food.

Homes.

Renationalisation of all utilities and those industries that are in the national interest.

how we get there or what waffle and lies they use or say on the way - get used to it - Parliament has been doing that everyday since Cromwell, it aint gonna change.
Another great post
Just wishful thinking on my part, and what do I know really?.
I've spent my entire life trying to fathom out why the current establishment, put the boot into its own people. Even when it has a long time in charge like the current bunch of useless xxxxx have.
They've never quite got over the early 1970`s and never will, they seem to spend most of their time threatening various sections of society. Turning on our hopeless population with the idea of sending anybody they dislike to a God forsaken place like Rwanda.

However, I still don't think the Labour Party will be in govt when the time comes, it seems most of the subjects this country have a love of far right wing politics.
Labour ! we have enough trouble with opposition from what is supposed to be our own kind.

Never mind eh!

Honesty and character are so important.

1) Create and support policies which benefit our communities in a way which levels the playing field
2) Fight to transform Parliament into a place which is representative of the country
3) Make decisions on international matters that are in the interests of the nation and of world peace and prosperity
4) Make the country competitive in areas which we’ve fallen behind - infrastructure, education, skills
5) Be honest, transparent and choose the best idea on the table, whether yours or the opposition
6) Party politics comes second from last in your list of priorities, personal ambition being the final priority

It is coming round to that time when we will have wall to wall election coverage. As usual there will be arguments which so often are simply 'I am not voting for that lot'. I have started to ask myself the question above. Might be theoretical and I realise that some things are difficult to quantify, but in no particular order, my priorities -

1) a commitment to correctly funded public services
2) a govt that supports innovation and entrepreneurship and has a credible economic plan
3) a govt that protects the most vulnerable in society
4) a govt that seeks alliances over arguments on the international stage
5) a govt that takes climate change seriously
6) a govt who is honest, both in their dealings behind the scenes but also with the public plus a return to decency in public office
7) a government with a genuine interest in improving the lives of everyone in the country

So what is important for you? I will probably find I have missed some things here.
All parties claim to do that now. So how would you decide which one to vote for?

Proper Public Services
Look after those who need help - Elderly, Disabled, Unemployed, young people trying to build a life for themselves
I won’t hold my breath…

Suffient investment in:

The NHS
Education
Policing
Bolstering our military

Getting a proper grasp and significantly reducing illegal immigration.

Can you explain that one as I'm struggling to understand it.
The NHS is in need of massive reform, or even better scrapping, but no one will try because it is viewed as a sacred institution and anyone who doesn't see "Our NHS" as the best model for providing health care is a heretic.

What would you replace it with if it was scrapped?

I think you need to be careful judging the NHS after so many years of tory control.

Remember they deliberately run it into the ground as they are ideologically opposed to it.

It was in a much better state in 2010 than it is now.

This doesn't make sense though. When you say scrapping what does that mean? Get rid of all the staff and the buildings and start again? What would a different service look like? It would be the same staff in the same buildings offering the same service to the same patients. The only difference you can really make is a funding one or an organisation one and reforming and moving things around is done regularly and rarely makes any difference and I can't see how people paying directly instead of through tax is going to benefit anyone but the people that currently pay the most (the high tax payers).

The biggest changes that are needed are long-term strategy around preventative healthcare, use technology to improve access/communication and improved social care to reduce the demand on the NHS services. Pay the staff better, train more of them and make it a desirable and worthwhile place to work again. None of those things require scrapping the existing service.
