What do Everton, Wolves and West Ham know the we don't

If the Gazette is to be believed all three clubs are linked/interested in Djed Spence. It might be all rubbish of course but lets say there is a grain of truth in the story. All three clubs are light years ahead of where we are in present times. So what do they see in him that we cannot see. Nearly all the rumoured clubs he has been linked with are at a higher standard than us. As I said it might be all rubbish and he may not go anywhere at all. Would that be a bad thing. Not in my book.

Those clubs can easily afford to take a £5m to £8 million gamble on a young prospect player like Spence, and it it works out, then great, but if it doesnt, then its not going to cause them any issues.

For them the bigger gamble is when they fork out £20 to £30 million on a player which they need to work well out of the traps.

Perhaps they can see that he has the raw materials to become a very good player and are willing to speculate a few million quid and see if he develops.

It's probably all just the usual made up media rubbish though.

He played well when he first broke through under Woodgate. Would assume that would be enough for clubs to have some interest. It's the sort of thing we look for isn't it? Players who've shown they can do it at some point, but who it's not working for now.

Exactly this.

I'm sure they see the same raw potential we do. But it's a different risk benefit analysis for a premier league team.

Exactly, they’re probably more interested in nurturing that side of him rather than beating out of him to get him to defend.

But surely we are the ones who need to gamble. All the mentioned clubs are wealthy we are not. We are the ones who need to nurture the player to either make us a better team or at least generate higher funds in the future. Having a manager who believed in him would help him not not sure Neil does.

most boro fans wouldnt know a footballer from a deep-sea diver.

in the same way that most gamblers wouldnt know a horse from a camel.

so no surprise.

which is a shame, as we had a knowledgeable crowd in days gone bye.

'attitude' is the latest buzz word to throw at someone - god alone knows what would be said about Graeme Souness, Alan Foggon, Craig Johnston, Bernie Slaven et al, in seasons past.

That works both ways. If we think his form when he first came through was a purple patch and he won't recreate that consistently then take the money and run.

Exactly this.

If the gamble pays off and said player turns into a £50 mil+ sale then win win. If player turns out to be average they can easily recoup £5mill in a few years time.

Agreed, although I’d think his price is more likely to be £2.5-£5m though.

Hope you’re right thought, would love to get £5m+ for him.

Our fan too often make the mistake of thinking if a player is any good, then they will show it from the off in his career, or that his progress will somehow be a straight, upwards line.

How many Nmechas do we need to see to abandon this way of thinking?

Spence is still 20. Lots of good players won't even have made their first team debut by that age; gone are the days when every team had one or two teenagers in them. That he hasn't "kicked on" yet is as lame a criticism as is possible.

For all the numpties shouting the "not a footballer" rubbish there are plenty who can see the potential in Djed. I think he has a lot of good qualities and the things that he hasn't got can be coached. I'll be sad to see him go and I think it will be a failure of Warnock's coaching and the way he wants defenders to play rather than any weakness in Spence's footballing acumen.

I disagree, he's had a lot more games where he's been poor rather than played well, he's quite athletic and thats his biggest draw. He's a very poor footballer.

You could say that about Howson and Saville over the length of their Boro careers. And yes I know Saville has gone. Howson was none existent in his first season and a half. It wasn't until he moved into back three he started to play well.

It's quite simple. The interested clubs can see what our large minority of fickle fans, who have zero patience with a young developing player, can't.

The lad definitely has potentially and is improving in my view.

Still think he'll end up as a winger rather than a full back though.

I agree , he absolutely has potential and the attributes to be successful, but I am not sure about his situational awareness and his ability to just switch off and forget what his job is supposed to be.

Can that be coached into him? if so he might well go on to have a top class career, if not, I suspect he will bounce around a few clubs till he finds one that will accommodate him.
