What a kind and caring country have we become?

More whataboutism. Screw Labour, they only instituted the welfare state with Atlee. How far back do you wish to go with posting irrelevant nonsense to this thread?
It's all irrelevant nonsense , they all have skeletons in the cupboard and always will as they are all self serving and will say anything but the truth when cornered.

Then why post it with regard to what we were discussing here?

I agree with you about how would she feel if she was her parents and we`d sent them somewhere - thousands of miles away - like Ascension Isles.
I remember the East African Asians being expelled in the 70s.
They had British passports and there was one almighty stink - now we have the children of those who started all over again - built businesses and saved up to look after their families......the the likes of Pritti is happy to schit on desperate people as if she was Britannia ruling the waves.
Unbelievable.

Patel follows an all too common trope of many of the ‘self made’ instead of reaching down to help others ascend they pull the ladder up to protect their ‘exceptionality’.

I can only put it down to an insecurity that others given the same opportunities would out-achieve them or somehow make their own achievements less unique.

No 10 have confirmed that they're looking into offshore processing but played down possible destinations. Patel is giving a speech at the weekend at the Tory conference, so it'll becomes very public then.

Oh ok it is an Overton Window then.

Leak 'ship the illegals to Ascension' & everyone goes 'what nonsense' but the idea is already in our heads.

Then announce a massive camp in Gatwick & say it is in "international land" and so people can be held there without 'entering the country' & will be deported when their asylum claim fails.... and everyone goes, 'well that is mental & evil but it isn't totally batshit & evil...'

In this instance it looks like this is a No 10 initiative, not the home office. It was reported Patel wouldn't want this.

Radio 4 has just had a segment about intercepting people offshore and using cruise ships & oil rigs as holding camps.
A Conservative MP reframes asylum as economic migration by rich, young men that needs to be deterred and that the govt need to do something, so perhaps 'in-shore holding areas' would work.

Does anyone else think of Nazi concentration camps when reading about this endeavor?

The really sad thing is, there are people among the electorate who will think this is acceptable. I personally can't see it happening, if it did, I think I would look to upsticks and get out of the UK.

On a similar vein, in terms of the government pushing through legislation that is clearly unpopular, the internal market bill now has the scottish parliament, and probably the welsh assembly too, maneuvering to withhold consent should the bill pass through the house of lords, which I don't think it will, certainly not first time.

Are we heading towards an enforced end to the union. What would westminster do if Scotland just said FU we're off.

I am with Roofie I never thought I would see this in my lifetime.

An acquaintance of ours from the US with residency rights here recently had an (almost) 2 year visit to the US. She came back last month and she asked the question "What's happened to this country? I hardly recognise it."

What it really shows is just how effing thick this cabinet really are!! Does the daft cow have any idea where those islands are and how logistically difficult and expensive it would be to get there?

That doesn't help. If people like you, me and others on this thread who find this kind of discussion abhorrent, don't up sticks and leave. Fight and protest for what you believe in. Talk to people, change minds, attend meetings where its discussed, engage with your MP and above all vote against the people proposing the measures. There is always lots to be done. I love this country, I've lived in a few different places, but this is home and I want it to remain so and also to be the country that welcomes anyone. This divisiveness needs to be stamped out, and only by staying and fighting for it, does that happen. Leaving just weakens a position further and gives MP's more evidence they can get away with it.

Never feel like you can do nothing.

BaronSmogie, my issue is that I am beginning to believe that we have, collectively, got exactly what we deserve. If that is true, and I am coming to that conclusion, what's left to save, what's left to fight for. We may end up cutting of the arm to.. well save the arm.

It is complete gibberish and is nowhere near being plausible.
It has to have been made up & leaked to take something else out of the news, not even Pritti Vacant could think is a good idea.

Home Office is saying nothing to do with them and they think it's a stupid idea. Or so I read. They say it's come from Downing Street staff.

Another cracking idea from the Cummings Freak Show and Superforecasting Circus it may seem.

That's what I read, even confirmed by a spokesman . . . but the home office civil servant has just admitted looking at all options and annoyed at the leak.
