Wenger proposes changes to offside law ahead of Euro 2020

Awful idea, makes the linesman's job harder.
Rather than checking to see if one part of an attacker is offside, they'll have to ignore almost every part of an attacker being miles offside and try to see if his toe was keeping him onside.

Yeah,. I think it’s best of just left as it is. Teams would have to almost completely change how they defend

Fantastic idea, then to help the officials we could introduce some electronic body-part scanning technology that will keep the game moving, just like VAR:poop:

Not sure if our refereeing expert is on the new board yet (Liamo I think), but how do assistants determine offside now in relation to body parts? What advice are they given during their training as to which part of the body they are looking at primarily?

When two players are being adjudged in an offside situation I doubt the assistants have the time or the ability to judge the positions of feet or shoulders in the same detail as VAR does. If we have to have VAR then apply the same principles and leave the millimetre forensics out of it.

TBH I'd just give the VAR reviewer one slowmo replay, no lines or anything, and if the linesman isn't obviously wrong from that, they stick with the linesman's call.

It's not a clear and obvious error, and there's unlikely to be an advantage to the attacking team.

To me, this enforces the intention of the offside law, if not the letter of the law.

That would definitely make the linesman job even harder.

I agree something needs to be done regarding VAR and offsides. But I don't think Wenger's proposal answers the problems.

In fact I think it would propose more problems in the game.

I honestly don't see the problem with the current situation. Yes there are question marks about how long it takes etc etc but as long as there is a consistent approach I don't see it as problematic. Wenger's suggestion, he says, will remove the need for VAR to judge offsides by reference to millimetres and lines etc. Nonsense. All the suggestion does is change where you put the lines, not the precision of the judgement.

I really don’t think he’s thought it through properly

If VAR is to stay then the rule needs to be amended, because at the moment its not working correctly. Fundamentally its to prevent attackers getting an unfair advantage and it favours defenders far to much.

Wenger has the right idea in principle, but the detail of it wouldn't work - shoulders or even torso would be simpler and fairer

But wherever that line is drawn in terms of the rule change won't fundamentally change that which Wenger and other complain about i.e. the lines and precision of the decision making process.

What we could do, rather than having to change the off side law......is just go back to the way it was before.
Pre-VAR.
You know, when football was so terribly flawed it grew to be the most popular played and watched sport on the planet.
Just get rid of VAR and accept that the odd decision will be wrong. After all, the odd wrong decision has happened since forever, and it didn’t stop us watching.

Rule change to support the use of VAR. What about other games where var isn't used? It's a farce

The problem is that pre-VAR the rule worked fine because there was a significant margin of error when making a call using the naked eye - in other words the assistant ref would make a professional guess, knowing that it was an instinctive decision, rather than an exacting one.

Now the technology has introduced a level of accuracy that the naked eye never could equal, its created an unintended consequence.

A happy medium between both will be found, but I suspect it will only be reached with a rule change - its not as if it will be the first rule change that has been introduced as the game evolves, thats just the way it is.

I kind of agree with what you are saying but I think the big issue will be that while a change may benefit the use of VAR, there are still going to be many many more games at professional level that don't actually use the technology. So should there be one offside law for VAR games and another offside law without?
