Well it looks like Tony Pulis could have been right after all

I doubt 50% of transfers are a success.[/QUOTE]
Every club in the country have overpaid for players. Look at Ferguson's history with keepers, Fulham paid £11m for a lad called Marlet sold him 2 years later fir £0, Sutton's 3 goals for Chelsea £12m ........
I doubt 50% of transfers are a success.
It just seemed like we went through a sustained period of paying twice as much for players. Once or twice maybe but season after season. Monk and Pullis.

Also didn't he have a few digs at Monk for his spending? Repeatedly talked about "being careful with Steve's money" and he's certainly tried to take credit for "cutting costs" and some of the player sales.

Which all suggests he was very much in control of incomings and outgoings.

Ironically he had a dig at Monk saying that when he first arrived at the club we had Bamford, Britt, Gestede, Braithwaite and Britt all wanting to be a striker. Sarcastically described it as brilliant recruitment, obviously without realising that he himself had just added to the problem by selling Bamford and replacing him with Hugill, still leaving us with 5 strikers.

In fact, he left us with an even more imbalanced squad when he left than what we had when he took over because of him buying too many midfielders. The John Obi Mikel signing was crazy looking back on it now. Completely unnecessary and imagine what wages he must have been on.

Exactly why is complete bollox whenever anyone claims we "had" to sell Bamford because we had too many forwards and he was the only one we had any interest in.

We could have kept Bamford, not signed Saville and not loaned Hugill and Mikel. Surely financially the same position (if not better) and we'd have had a better team (and still would have had Clayton, McNair, Howson and Besic for centre mid). The bloke is full of ****.

The best we looked all season was at the start of the season, when Pulis was forced to play Britt and Braithwaite as a front two and we set up with wing-backs. I remember at that point feel confident we'd be challenging for automatic promotion, that Pulis was the real deal and working miracles. Then of course he goes and brings in Hugill, Braithwaite was shifted out wide and we set up 4-5-1.

Aye I remember thinking at the time that Braithwaite was crucial to our good start. He was obviously a bit of a nob, but Pulis' man management of him wasn't great either.

Makes you wonder what Warnock could do with that group of players?!!!

I almost posted that Warnock is doing a similar job to Mogga; overachieving with an average squad, but then I realised that the current squad makes Mogga's look like Barcelona.

I think Mogga worked miracles with the players he had at his disposal and I'd have him back here in a shot (after Mr Warnock decides to finally enjoy his well deserved retirement of course).

I think fan expectation helps inflate prices...

Gates fall and fan apathy sets in without good signings, team undrperforms and fan anger increases...

Instant success is the only thing that satisfies fans.. theres not many that can sit and watch a team build...

Its very easy to 'generate excitement' with a £15m signing, but half the time in this league they won't be any better than an £8m player who happens to be 3 years older and/or with less to run on his contract.

We do love to cry over spilt milk on this board though.

That squad is actually ridiculous for this division when you look back now.

If only we had Warnock in charge back then.
