Wedding DJs

The missus (or soon to be) and I will be getting wed in June of next year and we are looking for a DJ.

The thing is, we don't want the usual wedding disco type vibe, not that there is anything wrong with that, but we'd like the music to reflect our own tastes (selfish, I know).

We are looking for a DJ who likes to play indie, rock, northern soul, motown genres and someone who would discuss with us what what bands/songs we want to have included etc.

I know there are a fair few music fans on here, so was hoping someone might be able to recommend me a DJ who plays the above, but doesn't mind doing weddings :)

Sounds like my type of night .I once went to a couple of great wedding nights.
First one had holiday in Cambodia playing as I walked in.
Next one was at a chopper club wedding held in the club house. Punk tribute playing .
If carlsberg did weddings .
I do a club night playing the genres you mentioned but I'm jacking in at end of this year .

Hope you get someone and congrats on the wedding and choice of music

Haha. I like just turning up with minimal gear .it's all about the music that's played for me .
If your going to be on point with the music .could you just not get a regular guy in and just give him a playlist .
Would be an easy job for somebody

A lot will depend on your venue , their sound system etc ..
It's a lot different asking someone to plug and play vs bringing a load of speakers etc.
I'd ask the venue first what's their sound system set up first , will make life much easier if someone is just bring a mixer and laptop.
Good luck and congratulations 👏🎉

I had a rock band for my wedding then had these guys on after to DJ they just played what I asked them too, which was a hefty mix of all sorts.

I had a band as well. They did the DJing afterwards and I could choose their songs (both live and DJ) myself and they were great. Got a lot of comments about how good the music was for the whole night. Nothing gets the crowd going like live music.

I have no idea how much a DJ costs. The band cost £1k but that was 5 years ago so prices have probably changed. Probably the best decision we made. The whole vibe of the evening is set by the band/DJ and I've been to some terrible ones.

One of the best ones which was DJ only was an Indian wedding. They were very good and the dance floor was packed all night.

my wedding was May, band was £1500, DJ was £280. Which seemed to be the going rates as I shopped around a fair bit.

Got no experience of weddings and I'm not sure what band you had .and whether there is some premium rate attached to weddings
But I book very good tribute type acts for my club night ska new wave type acts for around 350.

Disco guy sounds a lot more reasonable.
Just as a guide the scandals who play Stone Valley regular would be 800 to 900

A few hundred of that was travel expenses, though to be fair they were brilliant. Their is definitely a wedding premium though.

If a DJ is happy to do that then great. I guess it depends on whether they have the songs.

Where do DJs source their songs? It’s not like they need the vinyl or CDs these days but do they stream?

Digital files they have purchased.files ripped from cds they own . Your not supposed to use the likes of Spotify for public use as its illegal. But there is a way of playing the tunes offline. But technically still illegal.
They wouldn't normally stream.
I've just got a cache of digital files acquired over the years.
I sold most of my vinyl years ago .
Like another poster said it all depends on the set up of the venue.
With a dj controller and sound system at the venue. You could rock up with a USB in your top pocket.
The venue I play in has the amp and speakers all Installed.ive got the gear at home but much better travelling light
I'm more about the tunes I play rather than ectronic wizardry

They generally have their music stored on a memory stick or laptop, and use dj software to mix it with either a controller or xdj units
