We have become a very unforgiving society

Archbishop of Canterbury on Prince Andrew:

In the interview with ITV's Tom Bradby, Mr Welby said: "Forgiveness really does matter. I think we have become a very, very unforgiving society. There's a difference between consequences and forgiveness.

I think for all of us, one of the ways that we celebrate when we come together is in learning to be a more open and forgiving society.

Now with Prince Andrew, I think we all have to step back a bit. He's seeking to make amends and I think that's a very good thing.”

Anyone else’s mind just constantly blown at the moment?

Accused of sexually abusing a teenager.
Paid way out of it.
Now we are an unforgiving society?
The mind boggles.

He’s advocating turn the other cheek for Andrew? My, how inappropriate.

Its not up to us to forgive him it's up to the children he allegedly abused. Our job is to be vigilant and call out the behaviour of those who use their position to harm, unfortunately the church(and Government) seems to have forgotten this.

Astonishing.
At a time when religions struggle more than ever for relevance he alienates the CofE from just about anyone associated with it.
He's as much a fruitcake as any of the Royals.

Ill advised and questionable timing. He has hurriedly put out another statement saying he wasn’t referring “specifically “ to Prince Andrew.

FFS the fat sweaty nonce has faced zero consequences that is the issue of why people are unforgiving of him.

The Archbishop should let a few business men in their fifties get his 16 year old daughter ***ed up and take turns firing into her and pass her around their mates.

There'd be no need to forgive anyone then, if he's 100% happy with it, and thinks it is something people can just move on from.

The Archbishop of Canterbury's boss is Andrew's Mam though isn't she?

You'd expect the CoE to rally behind the royals as that's the only reason the church exists isn't it?

"There's a difference between consequences and forgiveness"

Yes, that's clearly a true statement. But crucially there must be consequences, before forgiveness then follows.

I do tend to agree that we are not a forgiving society though.

"he's seeking to make amends"

That's news to me. As far as I was aware the official line from the palace is that he's innocent.

And people wonder why some of us couldn't give a **** about the jubilee, the royal family or any of the ridiculous pomp and circumstance we have in this country that supposedly makes people "proud to be British".

Christ on a bike, talk about out of touch. I'm all for forgiveness, to the point of being open to the charge of being a soft bleeding heart liberal, but one of the nation's most privileged men has plainly bought his way out of a serious sexual assault allegation concerning a minor, and we are being berated for lack of forgiveness?
