We certainly rolled the dice in the summer

That’s my point I’d kill for George right now
The thing I don't get is that when Leadbitter was a player he would die for the cause. He is now coaching the first team and that doesn't seem to be passed to the current crop. For all the young and inexperienced players we have, we still have some experienced Championship players in there - Howson, Fry, Lenihan, Smith etc, but they are just seemingly watch this happen. They have to start taking charge when out on the pitch!

Mowbray's squad was equally poor, but we still had the likes of Leadbitter and Friend who would give their all.
Friend and Gibson both looked poor under Mowbray though. And Leadbitter was far from universally liked. I remember him being linked with a move to someone like Forest and plenty were up for cashing in.

Point being some players suit different styles better than others regardless of how good they are (or are not as individuals).

Mowbray also tended to leave the defence too exposed and they struggled.

I think there's actually a lot of similarities between Mowbray and Carrick, including the shocking run immediately following a very good run and being unable to halt the slide 😔

The transfer window has been diabolical. There's no dan in round it. It's been a total disaster.

2 incoming that look like they can hold their own out of 12. O'Brien and VDB.

But it appears from the start of the season not one of the new guys except maybe obrien are what you would call hang your hat on first 11 starters, they are all work in progress or just not ready for this level as yet.

Surely to go with so many risky punts that you would take in some experienced campaigners as a security blanket if nothing else.

I’m genuinely in disbelief at how bad our squad is, typified last night in josh coburn arguably our biggest attacking threat who was already at the club and was all set to be jettisoned out on loan in favour of these new recruits.
We didn’t need to throw these risky pints in at the deep end tho!! Why not slowly introduce them?

Fry and Howson are practically mute on the pitch. Lenihan not much more vocal. I think we've missed Smith in this regard. Against WBA he was going ballistic at people not closing down (although, to be honest, he was doing the same to Matt Phillips but at least he had the excuse that he was far from match fit).

I think the waters have been muddied by bringing in too many players, so with every bad result the ones not playing seem the answer. We were poor first game out against Millwall, but looked like a team, indeed that was basically the side that had been playing pre season. Since then we’ve chopped and changed to little effect. This can’t be good for confidence or cohesion.

Carrick's having a lesson in what the difference between a coach and manager is.

Manager gets a say in how the club deals with contracts and choses who we buy and sell
Coach has to deal with what he's given.

Feel sorry for the lad as he could do some good things with a decent squad, but even 2004 Mourinho would struggle with this side at the minute.

We will get better results and be fine but I feel like we've miss sold this to Carrick. Carrick seems like a decent lad mind, so might be up for sticking around for a few years to build the lads up, but if we keep scraping the prize assets off the top, and back filling with inexperienced players it's going to be a tough job to say the least.

We do have alot of experience in this squad i just think most lack real quality to carry lower quality, inexperienced players.

Dieng
Smith
Mcnair
Fry
Lenihan
Howson
O'Brien
Mcnair
Barlaser
Crooks

You mention giving there all, i dont think any of these players toss it off or dont give 100%. Truth is they just probably aren't very good.

Leadbitter, Friend were good players too

no McGree, no Jones.. no fit right back, no left back,.. and there we have the poblem.

We can still field 10 outfield players with players that were here when Carrick took over. Akpom and Giles are the obvious omissions, but if we can get Bangura playing left back (we don’t have anyone else) and give Josh a run of games, or play Forss up top, then we have enough players to get us out of this mess, at least until January anyway.

Something is very wrong though, and it needs addressing quick.

The problems are at Right Back if Tommy Smith and at Left Bsck our Ryan Giles replacement has only just played 69 minutes.. if Howdon is not fit he still does not have cover.

Surely we’ve got a few jems knocking about.

He gets a say in who we buy. He probably can't hand pick players like managers used to, but he says which of the options the recruitment team put before him he wants us to go for.

If Archer, Ramsey, Giles were our players I don't think we'd have been selling any of them this season. The only "prize asset" we've sold is Akpom and his contract situation drove that sale. We clearly will cash in (as will every championship side) on players from time to time but the bigger issue at this moment in time is the "prize assets" weren't ours to begin with and we've not come close to replacing them.
