Warnock signing players from lesser teams!!

Didn’t Liverpool in their pomp sign Ian Rush from Chester? History I know but I think it serves to illustrate the point in signing from so called lesser teams.

I agree with the OP

Signing players from clubs higher up the pyramid is not a path to success. They're being sold by those clubs because they're not good enough for that level.
I couldn't give a monkey's about being excited when players sign. So long as the they do the business once the season starts.

I think the last time I was exited by our SUmmer activity was under WGS when we spend big, and spent badly. The Summer optimism, our pre-season favourites tag, all gone in 90 minutes of a 3-1 defeat to Ipswich. The buzz is not worth chasing.

Well we are in the football food chain have to buy from who's below us. Difficult to buy good players from teams above us as we don't have the finances to offer a good enough bid to interest the selling club to sell. But clubs lower down are cash strapped so are bargains to be had

Warnock signs players to fit a system, he’ll identify what he perceives as is needed in that system and buy to suit, in the past most of his teams creativity, Taarabt aside, has been in wider areas and he’s always liked a physical striker who is able to play with his back to goal, in his book he says that he’ll see where his unit is short and buy to offset that deficiency, for instance if his defence lacks pace and he needs a right back he’ll buy the quickest available, if the midfield lacks bite he’ll buy the best tackler, etc etc he’s all about creating a collective rather than individuality.

Personally, I don’t buy into this myth that we aren’t an attractive proposition. We’ve as much potential as anyone outside the top 8, who I dismiss as not really football clubs anymore, they’re more like corporations, they remind me of Gordon Gecko.
I like what we do, I’ve thought for years that we should’ve been cannier in our recruitment, I think we’re gonna do well and my hope is that when promoted we still look to buy people from further down the pyramid.

Pretty much the story of life basically 😎

Its the only way a club like ours can compete anymore, a good proven player at this level will cost min 8 million so we need to either look to our academy or sign players from the lower leagues/abroad if we ever want to progress, yes its not exactly guaranteed results but we dont really have any other option other than fill the squad full of loan players, but next season we are back to square one.
Bola and Dijksteel are perfect examples of how it can work well, to sign them now you will be looking at 20 million, add to this players from the academy Tav and Fry we probably have 50 million worth of players that have cost us nothing. Hopefully Payero will be one to add to this list plus someone like Browne/Wood if they can get a run of games

IMO i watch boro play teams below us in league or from lesser divisions and for the most part dont see a clear gulf in class. I just think its all about how consistent a player is that helps you rise up the league to progress your career in the game. Thats why alot of good players are in lower leagues- they cant perform every week to the required standard

I am pleased with recruitment this summer upto now, the players may not be world beaters. But at least we seem to be buying players to fit a system. Not buying 4 strikers and 5 midfielders then thinking where can they fit, and end up with midfielders playing as wingbacks, strikers as wingers ect ect. At least the players we are signing will be played in a position they are familiar with so should preform better than a better player who is playing out of position like which has happened in past seasons(I hope that makes sense, I may not of worded it well).

What can't be forgotten is that we lost to all of the bottom 7 last season - most of which were at home. Crooks and Ikpeazu had great games against us.

If indeedio isnt excited about the signings I think it means we can be

indeedio wasn’t excited by sterling but the rest of country was 😉
Hello Gaz 💄
I didn't expect to be excited by the signings and I'm not, but you miss the whole point - as per usual you sad little stalker.
We can't afford exciting signings and so my hope lies in Warnock choosing wisely, then organising and motivating the group he assembles. That could well end up being exciting.

As for Sterling, he lit the Euro's final up as brightly as he did the Champions League final. Let's see how big a part he plays this season.

The winky was clearly tongue in cheek fella

Ref: Brentford

People see players coming through that have been bought cheaply on a regular basis and those people think Brentford have a wonder touch, But you don't see the the ones that don't make it. Brentford will may be buy 8 young players a season for the first team squad and only 2 make it. But we only see the two.

They were also able to put out 2 different teams as well - hence they were able to progress in the League Cup without it affecting their league form.

Moving on players on high wages and being a bit tight with new contracts should allow us to have a bit bigger squad which I think is important for a top 6 side.

ive not seen these posts criticising the signings.

ive seen one comment about warnock on buying journeymen, but no others

can you point me to them?

Ta in advance.
There hasn’t been many posts criticising Warnocks signings, only a few that I’ve seen, I think most people agree with Warnocks approach.

I haven’t been keeping a log of them either but if you see Caesium137’s post that was made just prior to yours I suppose he / she has summed up the view that some people are somewhat underwhelmed by our signings so far 👍

It doesn’t matter where the players come from, it’s their ability and desire to do well that counts. We’ve spunked a lot of money on dross and little effort. Clearly he has a tiny budget to work with but he does have a track record of success with that. Here’s hoping.

But as it stands we are massively short of achieving what we did last year.

I remember Willie Maddren was given a little money in 1985 after 4 years in monetary desert for the Boro.

I believe in 85 he bought:

Brian Laws (Huddersfield)
Archie Stephens (Bristol R)
Pat Heard (Sheff Wed)
Gary Rowell (Sunderland)
Don O`Riordan (Carlisle)
Mitch Cook (Scarboro)
Steve Pears (3rd choice at MU)
Bernie Slaven (Albion Rovers)

For roughly £500k each in todays money say £4m in total - 3 of those players got us 2 promotions on the trot, 4 if you count Archie. Some of the money was wasted but generally very good business overall. None were wow signings and in the summer of 86 we thought the money had been wasted.

Warnock’s signings haven’t been very good though?

Morsy’s decent. The only big money one, Chuba, was a failure. Our results didn’t improve with loan signings last Christmas. Bola and Dijksteel he made players of, but they were signed by Woodgate.

I don’t mind the recruitment this summer on paper, let’s see how they do with an open mind but it’s a bit of a stretch to credit Warnock with the transfer market Midas touch?

Edit - Watmore, of course, fantastic.
