Huddersfield take on Promoted Sheffield United tonight.
The old warhorse - [marmite to his mates] - looks to have saved yet another club from the dreaded drop. Noted for his unique "style" and approach, his amicable relationship with referees and his taste for a glass of Tesco Red. Neil Warnock has taken Huddersfield from being dead and buried - with players looking like they had the weight of the world on their shoulders - to within a point of survival.
Gradually, the Terriers have climbed out of the relegation places and given themselves the opportunity to seal survival in the Championship for another season. When you think - it was only a season ago they were in with a chance of getting promoted back to the Premier League - you can have some sympathy with Town fans.
His players - including old pro`s like Jordan Rhodes, have played for the Gaffa and dug the Terriers out of the bottom.
Their current form is considerably better than when Warnock arrived. Although it may not appear a great achievement, he`s done what`s been required. The highest point this season was reaching 20th place! That was [of course] due to the Warnock magic wand.
They go into tonight`s game still needing at least a point on the board.
Their current form compared with the Blades highlights Warnock`s success.:
Although scoring has been one of the biggest problems this season, Warnock has tightened the defence, motivated the lads and shut up shop to take the steam out of the opposition. Perhaps his best result was the 4-2 defeat of Boro in front of their home crowd. We didnt like it, but it had to be Neil Warnock didnt it?
Tonight`s opponents are nothing new to Warnock who seems to have Managed half the teams in the EFL ["if Im honest"]. He was Manager at Sheffield United for eight years from 1999 - taking the Blades into the Premier League in 2005. They struggled and were relegated next season, but he got them up with a squad of players on a shoestring against the odds.
Scoring and lack of confidence and self - belief has been a big problem for the Terriers this season. This hasnt been helped by the car crash of Managers they have had to endure, whilst trying to focus on their game: since Carlos Corberan was relieved of his duties in July 2022, Neil Warnock became Towns 6th Manager in eight months! That beats even Watford`s record for sacking Managers!
So lets see if the Terriers can turn over the Blades tonight.
I hope so.
