Here is my two penneth. Coulson offers raw pace. He burst on the scene after years of having no controlled pace down that left hand side. We were crying out for excitement after relegation, Monk and Pulis. It lit a spark in us. Unfortunately, for reasons I am still not sure he has failed to kick on. Injury, opportunity, ability are all issues in the mix as to why. Is he a full back? Not for me, Is he a winger? Not for me, not yet. He has something, pace, but what else? Not the best tackler, ball carrier, dribbler or crosser. His product is raw pace with work to do on his game.
I understand why he is not quite nailing down a place. I think he needs game time but on loan at a club at our level where he is an almost guaranteed starter, but with a manager who is happy to provide the opportunity and coaching whilst allowing him the chance to make mistakes and learn without fear of being benched. He is in danger of being a nearly man, an impact player when chasing a game. I would not start him on what I have seen of him, but he has pace which hurts teams, but is not properly harnessed. Spence is another.
I want us to play 4 at the back, the wing back system leaves us too open in midfield and vulnerable to pace down the flanks for me, but given our current squad make up we have little choice. The squad is disjointed and in need of more reinforcements than some think if we want promotion. Yesterday is early days, but emphasised our lack of a ball carrier, pace and creativity in midfield and the final 3rd. Defensively at set pieces we were still a work in progress and in open play letting too many crosses come from wide, yet we played with promise and hope and did not deserve to lose. Luck coupled with mistakes at both ends of the pitch cost us.
Still, at least the Sky team could salivate over poor relegated Watford whilst these Northern upstarts were neatly dispatched. Watford got away with one and purely on that basis will not be top 2. Equally we looked a mid table outfit based on one game alone.
