Wales slate mines world heritage status

Just as Stonehenge might have its status removed if the proposed tunnel goes ahead with the current design.

Then again if we saved Redcar Blast Furnace - due to be demolished next week - we might actually have an assemblage of buildings left either side of the river to have some kind of international status for our steel industry.
Remember when the Royal Exchange was knocked down it was because it was said by Cleveland County Council that the A66 would open up economic opportunities all along the south bank of the Tees. That was the argument at the time. People have argued against the decision ever since, ironically more than at the time. The Redcar blast furnace demolition will remove an iconic landmark and an opportunity for future tourism and place identity. Once gone it is gone.

'Once gone it is gone' Says it all. Sad that evidence of our long history of providing engineering excellence and craft to the world is being erased at it's starting point.

World Heritage Status is a bit of an odd one really, the majority of the site is within the Snowdonia National Park which gives it more protection than WHS does.
It brings no direct funding & its withdrawal is held over the local authority's held by all the NIMBYs that want to preserve the place in aspic.

I'm sure the local tourist board will have a field day "You've ascended Machu Picchu, you've walked along The Great Wall, you've smelt the Pyramids now get rained on in an abandoned quarry in North Wales".
