Wagner would be a dream appt surely ?

Yep I'd take him - good record in the division and experience from elsewhere (albeit I think he'd gloss over his time at Schalke in his interview!)

Would expect a massive overhaul in playing staff though, think there's few at the club who would be up to his standards and quality.

40 games in charge of Young Boys most recently, 1.73PPG... that's not a bad return. Wonder what went wrong?

Ah, here we are...

In the summer of 2021, Wagner was heavily linked with the vacant manager's position at recently relegated Championship club West Bromwich Albion, however talks broke down.[31] On 10 June 2021, he was appointed manager of Swiss Super League reigning champions Young Boys.[32]

On his debut on 24 July, Wagner's team won 4–3 at FC Luzern.[33] Having won three qualifying rounds, the team took part in the UEFA Champions League group stage where they came last with one victory, a 2–1 home win over Manchester United in the opening fixture on 14 September.[34]

Wagner was unable to lead the Bern-based club to a fourth consecutive league title and was dismissed in March 2022. The team were in second place, 15 points behind FC Zürich.[35]

I didn’t realise he was out of work and available.
Surely we ought to be going for this fella ???
Passionate, straightforward chap, proven championship success!
I’d be buzzing if we got him
German/American national was very highly regarded in back 2017 and it sounded like we were in for him a number of different times.

Although he played 4-2-3-1 predominantly, the players we have and the players we have brought in the summer seem much more suited to that shape.

David Wagner brought Matthew Hoppe to Schalke 04, Tommy Smith to Huddersfield, infact it almost looks like our summer transfer activity was geared towards satisfying him as our manager.

4231 with our squad:

Steffen
Smith Fry McNair Bola
Howson Crooks
Jones McGree Giles
Muniz

Dijksteel—Lenihan—Clarke—Bilongo

So will have to be Pep or Klopp then if has to be someone who has been a success. Maybe Arteta they are currently top of the league
I didn't imply that either. Huddersfield was a long time ago and he's done little of note in the 5 years since except make a Swiss championship winning side lose something they'd won the previous 4 years by 15 points. He was promoted, like another poster said, with a negative goal difference. My post was based on performance evidence, not an emotional response. He's not good enough.

I've got no problem with that formation, and think it's one of the few which we could easily adapt to, and it also looks a way of getting a free player in the team, in place of Mowatt who does zero.

Couple of changes for me though:

Steffen
Dijk Fry Lenihan Bola
Crooks Howson
Jones McGree Giles
Muniz

Dijk has to play, he's been our best defender, and McNair's been the worst so he won't start for me.

We still need two holding midfielders there though, Crooks would be a liability, the number of cards he gets and Howson's passed it, but would be a positive having crooks in there for calmness on the ball. He might get bored being that deep though, he likes getting in the box. Could do with a better no 10, maybe even swap McGree with Crooks positionally.

He’s tied up because of his contract with Young Boys.. something similar to what Tony Mowbray had with Celtic. It would take a big payout or for Wagner to write it off like Mowbray did.

2019/20 - Woodgate - 3-5-2 - 21.95% (eight letter surname)
2020/21 - Warnock - 3-5-2 - 38.7% (seven letter surname)
2021/22 - Wilder - 3-5-2 - 39.13% (six letter surname)

Unfortunately Wagner does not currently fit the criteria

Gary Walsh, this is destiny calling you back from West Brom via the old boys network...
