Vietnam Covid variant a hybrid of Indian and UK variants.

Going to mass test all of the people living in Ho Chi Minh City.

Interesting that one of the articles sayd Vietnam have had 7 variants previous to this.

"According to Vietnam’s Health Minister, the hybrid variant concentrates in throat fluid allowing it to spread very quickly. Vietnam has seen 7 Covid-19 variants previous to this one, and this hybrid will be announced the global genetic strains soon. Speculation exists on whether this unique hybrid of the 2 variants will end up branded with a geographical name, being dubbed the Vietnam variant, as the recent naming of a variant originating in Egypt but identified in Thailand has raised ire with government officials after being dubbed the Thai variant."

Why is everything heralded as mega-dangerous etc. Do we have any idea if the present vaccines work, or even if people who have had a previous variety are susceptible? The media should be limitted to fact and not speculation with respect to this pandemic. Cretins.

Wow, thanks for that GazC - I guess I forget just how lucky we are.
The global position is so much worse than that in the UK, I still believe they are keener to sensationalise the possibility of a worst case rather than being even handed with the positives from the vaccines but that map is quite depressing. The Bank Holiday beers haven't helped rein in my view either!

After giving visa waiver extensions for the last 15 months+ VietNam is effectively kicking out all foreigners. Even those who have been there decades.
Apparently leaving some without the means to get home. Feel for them but some have been in society opt-out mode too long.

Seems they feel giving up their tourist industry is a sacrifice worth making to protect its citizens or alternatively maybe an excuse to relieve themselves of people who have
outstayed their welcome

That world map shows that we'll be living with Covid-19 for a while yet. The worry is that the longer we take to vaccinate the more variants will have chance to develop.

Friend of mine took a year out from the rat race a few years ago to backpack around that part of the world by himself. He always said Vietnam was one of the most beautiful countries he's ever visited with really friendly people.

All those SE Asian countries are so nice people. As a rule the poorer the country and the least that people have the friendlier and happier they seem to be. Laos one of the poorest is amazing.
