VDB or Engel left back at SoS?

Who starts there on Saturday morning?

Rav for me… we need a proper defender against their quality down the wings.

Think Mogga will know to target Engel if he’s too far up the pitch.
Engel is how we play.. Ryan Giles was criticised at the start of his boro loan.. would you want to do without Ryan Giles against Sunderland?

We need to find out what Bangura has, Sunderland have pace out wide and Engel defensive side of his game has shown he is susceptible to pace. Bangura is quick by all accounts so he’d get my vote, but whoever Carrick trusts most is the right answer.

Was Giles criticised? My memory is he was recognised as one of our bright sparks during Wilder's terrible start to last season.

100% yes.. some even blamed Giles for our demise! The usual.. he's a winger, will never make it as a footballer.. didn't exactly pull up any trees for.. Blackburn or Cardiff.

only difference is Engel had less game time and was asked to play in a more defensive role.. Giles in a 3-5-2 got plenty of stick yes.

This is the specific game Coulson was offered a new contract for.
So we offered a contract to Coulson , who is now 5th choice LB behind
Obrien, Bangura , VDB , Engel ? On this game !
MC will play Mcgree LB before Coulson .
I would love to see him bulk up and play as a LWB , he is 25 year old , crucial time for him to step up or not .
Let's hope he steps up , as I think he has something to offer , the manager sees him every day so knows better than most of us .

Sorry. I thought it was obvious I wasn't being serious 😳 We didn't even know which league either ourselves or Sunderland would be in when he was offered a new contract.
Although it might be as good an explanation as any for his strange contract extension.

Really interesting to see the line up on Saturday I have no idea who Carrick will pick but we got our first clean sheet on Tuesday will he be tempted to keep the same line up, but at the same time I will be surprised if both McNair and Engel keep their places, I would also be tempted to play Bangura, but who knows

Engel has gone from zero to hero in 90 mins. The lad will be buzzing and full of confidence. Hopefully he's learned more about the role we want him to play over these last two weeks. I don't think he'll get as much space on Saturday as he did the other night, but hopefully someone will pass to him if he does.

I think we'll see...

.................Dieng

Smith...Fry...Lenihan...Engel

......Howson...Hackney

Jones.....Crooks.....McGree

................Coburn

I'd be tempted to start Forss instead of Jones, and bring Jones and Lath on as an impact subs.

Yeah was thinking the same about Forss great player and better at defending than Jones but at the same time it would hard to drop Jones after recent performances at least Carrick has some good options now

I have no idea. If there is some sickness in the camp it will effect who plays.

If all options are available I think Carrick will opt for engel or bangura as LB because it is the way we play.

Front 4, who knows.

So to summarise, I dunno.

Unchanged backline for me.

I think we'll be in for a difficult day defensively whoever plays, but it was a rare cleansheet against Cardiff, it would be a big hit to Engel's confidence if he was dropped again after a good performance, and it's not like we looked good defensively with VDB starting either.

With both full backs fit I think VDB will mainly CD going forward (his main position).

I'd probably stick with Engel but don't think it will be long before Bangura replaces him as first choice.

I think you are dead right

Engel wasn’t really pressured too much defensively v Cardiff but did well in what he did. He will be challenged more on Saturday but as his confidence should be high I would keep the faith.
