US Federal holidays

I see it's something that's called Juneteenth National Independence day , I didn't know it . A friend asked me why the US stock market hadn't opened up. He'snot too clever on things so I searched for him. Then it got me looking at the main holidays in the States. And then it got me thinking well, if any of these 10 is it, fall on a Sat or Sun is it like here in Brexitland where you get the time off deferred to the next actual working day ? Is that what happens.

Juneteenth is a new federal holiday which was just put on the national calendar, so we’re all off again. 4 day working week upon us all lol 😆

Some countries don't get the day off if it falls on a weekend. There are a lot of countries that have more than us and whenever it is talked about us getting an extra one they say we get fewer than those countries but because we get ours whether they fall on a weekend or not then we usually get the same or more on average.

The US have as little worker protection where possible so I'd imagine they get whatever the worst option is.

There are only 5 Federal Holidays that are tied to a date.....Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Independence Day (4th July), Veterans' Day (11th November) and, since 2021, Juneteenth (19th June). The first four are observed the following Monday if they fall on a weekend; Juneteenth is not (so today is the first time many people have actually had the day off for this day).

For completeness, the other days are Martin Luther King Jnr Day (3rd Monday in January), President's Day (3rd Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Labor Day (1st Monday in September), Columbus Day...contentious one these days (2nd Monday of October) and Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November)

Is the holiday situation in the US really as bad as it sounds from a distance?

Any of our US based posters care to give a real view of it.

I've heard they only get about 10 days leave a year? That surely can't be right.

It's a different mindset, so yes they get less days (I'd say the average was nearer 20) plus they get the Federal holidays above.......but they also get "sick days". Unlike in the UK where we only use sick time if we are ill, it's not considered wrong by some people to turn these sick days into "personal days" and to max them out every year by calling in "sick".

Isn't the big difference that there is no statutory minimum? And isn't it different in different states? Asking individuals what they get isn't going to give the full answer (especially amongst a group you'd expect to be in roles where conditions are better than average).

The offshore lads were doing 6 weeks offshore and a long weekend at home when I was out there.

The lads and lasses in the office had two weeks holiday each year (10 days).
