Universal Basic Income

The fact that the test is just a handful of people instead of everyone makes the data a bit worthless. The real question is if everyone was on UBI then what would a poor person look like? Would everything just go up in cost so there's no difference? £1,600 might be more than minimum wage now, and provide a comfortable life, but if everyone had £1,600 before earning anything else then the things that someone that currently has £1,600 can afford will be very different.

Would we all still be working anyway? I'm guessing we would because most people still want more than just basic survival.

Whatever value UBI is set at will be the new minimum cost of rent. It's landlords, shareholders and the rich, just like now, that will benefit most from UBI.

I really support UBI in principal. It sounds like a great idea but I'm really not convinced it will change anything in practice.

£1600 a month to do nothing... personally if it were to happen i would still work but probably find a job i enjoy to do more and maybe work less hours. Im sure a small minority would abuse it but i think it could lift a lot out of poverty.
small 👀

I am all for a fairer system, including benefit system for those struggling, but jeez, why should someone get money for not even having to lift a finger. Work via public service for it at least, it would attract all sorts of wrong attitudes.

East Finchley! What do those ******* need an extra grand and a half for? They probably spend that much on gravel for their massive drive in their massive house.

Possibly symbolism? The Jarrow march and thatchers old constituency.

Ridiculous idea. Everything just goes up in price. Best way to get the country moving in the right direction - give bone idle workshy able bodied adults less free money. Crazy idea

Where is your evidence so support that stance?
don’t have any but it’s common sense isn’t it. If £1600 is the new start point then prices go up to reflect. The downside is unemployment in lower paid jobs goes up so there’s less tax to fund the free money. It just stinks of the self entitled society we now live in where everybody thinks they should have the newest car, phone, holiday etc without working for it

Why not wait until the end of the study, to see what the results are? Then maybe we can properly assess how the study group of bone idle workshy able bodied adults who've been given free money, works out.
I’m no Einstein but I’ll hazard a guess. They will think it’s better than getting £800 free money

Yeah, I've noticed that prices have remained relatively stable recently. Obviously those businesses that have increased their prices and profit margins by an average of 73%, had prior warning of this scheme and decided to get their retaliation in first. I look forward to prices going down, when using supposed common sense and ignoring any evidence gleaned from the study takes effect.

They need to trial UBI as many of us will be on it in the next few decades.

Robots can now flip burgers, robots can deliver your food to your table, don’t need counter staff anymore as you order at touch screens, supermarkets are now opening with no checkout staff and robots stack shelves.

Artificial Intelligence is now coming for people’s desk jobs - writers, accountants, planners, salespeople, call centre workers, managers, etc.

It’s the future.
