Ukraine - Time to encourage peace to stop the cost of living crisis?

I think we should be encouraging peace to save thousands of innocent people being slaughtered and to avoid 10 million being forced out of their homes.

The reality of the carnage and political approach in the Ukraine in this day and age is quite staggering.

But we seem to have a strange war between two Slavic nations which surely could have been avoided by sensible political leadership being sustained by western governments feeding just enough ammo every now and again to allow the Ukraine to put up a bit of a fight and at least slow down the demolition of their towns and cities.

I can’t understand any of it.

Is the plan to hope Putin dies? Or gets fed up? Or runs out of money?

Its neither nothing nor something in my opinion, and meanwhile millions of normal innocent people suffer badly.

Biden and Johnson haven't been pushing for peace, they told Ukraine they weren't ready for the war to end and have encouraged the Ukrainians to keep fighting.

The goal is not peace, it's to drag Russia into a military conflict that will ruin them militarily and economically. Biden admitted at the start he hadn’t spoken to Putin on the phone, why not?

If Biden wanted peace he’d be on the phone to Putin or be meeting him at a neutral country for peace talks.

The Ukrainians are asking the US for weapons that can hit targets INSIDE Russia. This is insane, ourselves and the Americans must refuse this request.
It won’t be long before citizens of the UK / US start turning on the financial and military support for Ukraine, as it’s currently a blank chequebook which is fuelling the cost of living crisis and squeezing their living standards.

"The goal is not peace, it's to drag Russia into a military conflict that will ruin them militarily and economically."

Russia was not dragged into a military conflict - Russia started it in: 2008, 2014 & NOW IN 2022 - if Russia had been successful in rolling through Ukraine as the dictator in chief had hoped, I'd believe he'd have rolled his army via Belarus to the 3 former Russian controlled countries, also south into Moldova.... he may then have had his red-mist fully on & dreamt of recreating the former Soviet era domination.

It's up to the Russian people to get shot of Putin though some intervention to stop by China may give the mentalist some cause for a rethink.

If Russia does gain effective control of both regions it is declaring as republics - the war will continue & maybe even escalate as Russia will continue to shell into Ukraine. There is no incentive to stop if Ukraine is in effect only shelling itself ( the two occupied regions within its own internationally recognised boundaries )

Fascism - Russia - should never be appeased, yes, it may impact everyone financially - that is up to our own Gov's to work out. Unfortunately we have the incompetent liar & his cronies in charge, ATM..

I think everyone should 'push for peace' due to the mindless slaughter.

I imagine the fact petrol and a can of beans costing more for us is pretty low priority.

I thought we had recently sent or agreed to send such weapons?

I kind of think Russia deserve all they get in this respect - Putin might think twice when Russia is getting bombed too. But I also see how it leaves the UK open as a target.

Ukraine had asked the US for 300km missiles as oppose to the 70km missiles they were originally offered.

Their intent being to hit targets inside the Russian border.

US said no and again offered them the 70km weapons, similar to what we have given them.

As much as Russia might deserve it, I don't see how Ukraine hitting targets inside Russia with NATO supplied weapons would have brought us any closer to peace.

This is an odd one Ingleby. You are right supplying weapons to Ukraine that can be used to target Russia might be risky. On the other hand, why should the rest of the world play by the rules when Russia is not. They are targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. Why should their homeland not be a target?

Not a question for you to answer, nor any of us on this thread.

It's always the Americans fault. Putin is a Biden stooge, the EC is not paying for this appalling war in gas.

It's all down to Brexit.

There I have joined the club.

Russia was not dragged into a military conflict - Russia started it

Where did I say it was dragged into this or that they didn't start it?

But the goal from the UK /US is to drag them deeper into this creating a Afghanistan style conflict that will ruin them militarily and economically.

Johnson went to Ukraine and told them not to negotiate with Putin, no negotiations are possible and we will not be part of any peace agreement.

That doesn't sound like someone who's pushing for peace. Ukraine are only still in this fight thanks to billions in support from us and the United States, that's not sustainable. So as much as none of us might like the reality there is going to have to be some sort of compromise with the Russians for this to end.

When did he ever say this?

There's a difference between not caving to outrageous demands and not negotiating.

It's the equivalent of Russia landing in Cornwall then taking it over over then Dorset and Hampshire too.

We are not to fight back or take arms from another country. After all it's only the South West and nowhere near here

I am quite proud to be on the step in my mid 60's, it is so refreshing.

I will thank those who contacted me to help.

I still do not know why, but I learnt my lesson and will always agree with the club, there is one

So Brexit was wrong, Sinn Fein are wonderful, all people who voted Tory are ****, most of the working class are; stupid, thick as mince. Imbeciles and feeble minded, all non EVs should be banned forthwith. The Queen needs a good F'ing and I will by a flute to whistle during the National Anthem.

I do have sympathy for Rob and the admin team, it must be a nightmare they do a cracking job.

you made more sense when you were on the naughty step.
