UK Longest Tunnel

Hell of a project, Kielder Water. It'd never get done now. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell was a child when they were building it. Her dad, Mike, took her round all the emptied out houses before they were flattened and got her to play them each a farewell tune on her penny whistle.

The lost village of Plashetts - now under the lake - is well worth a read up on. It had a school, a coal mine, a post office etc, plus a station on the Border Counties railway line, and you can still see the remains of the line before it disappears into the lake and then out of the northern end.

Northumbrian Water insist that there's nothing underneath the water but I know local shepherds who insist that when the army were tasked with blowing up the remaining buildings, their explosives were too powerful and so some of the structures are still there, hidden beneath the depths.

Redcar to Hartlepool?
Was reading the comments section on Teesside live, someone mentioned there is a tunnel already with not just pipes going between the various industrial sites but a tunnel where you can walk from one side to the other, it's not open to the general public.

There’s definitely a tunnel under the river Tees which all of the old ICI pipes run through, not sure of it’s dimensions but I was told a car could have got through it at one point although possibly before all of the pipes were put in

There are 2 tunnels which belong to Sembcorp. The older 1 going into North tees is falling apart. The newer one will be having another pipeline put in for BP in the next year or 2. Only accessible via a vertical shaft at each end so no chance a car could get in

the 24 inch gas main runs through no2 tunnel runs all the way to Old TPL site. Sembcorp own the pipeline and recently inspected it for BP and it good to go. they(bp) will use it for their new plant.

Isn't there a stat somewhere that because of Kielder 5% of the population has access to 25% of the nation's water. 1970's forward thinking.

Don't know but Kielder is the reason why even when the rest of the country has hosepipe bans, we don't.
When I worked down sarf many years ago I remember Thames Water refusing assistance from Northumbrian on the basis that the water in Keilder was "dirty". This from a company that supplies water that's already been through 8 people before it gets into your glass.

They have no idea on the condition of it and are playing Russian Roulette with it.
