Turkish quake

Reportedly a 7.8. That is absolutely huge and in a fairly poor part of the country. The death toll and damage will be enormous. And if it isn't bad enough for the Turks, haven't the Syrians in Alepppo province seen enough destruction. Horrendous. I was in a 5.8 in Istanbul 3 years ago. That was scary enough. I can't even imagine what a 7.8 would feel like.

Scary isn't it how depending on where you are in the world, spends on your chances. Somewhere like Japan would have s low death rate from something like this, but somewhere in the middle east? No chance. Even western turker would have faired better

It doesn't help that money given to Turkey to upgrade buildings to withstand earthquakes magically seems to have assisted in the building of Erdogan's palace.

But a 7.8 will have dire consequences wherever it hits to be honest. That's one of the largest recorded inland strike/slip fault quakes.

The damage looks utterly horrific, and that’s just from the major cities never mind the outlying towns and villages. Death toll will be massive and with aftershocks to come that will cause even more damage. I experienced a 7.1 in Dearth Valley, ground was rolling and then overnight in a shaking hotel room wasn’t the best night‘s sleep ever - something that massive in a built up area is horrendous.

A Turkish guy I worked with was caught up in the 1999 earthquake. He told me that their wardrobe fell on top of them while they were in bed. It fell doors open and they got out of the back of it. May well have saved their lives. He said outside it was just dust everywhere like it was in New York after 9/11. And in the days that followed, the smell got progressively worse.
A friend of mine was living out there but came back last year. She said there was always little shocks here and there, but everyone out there knows that there will be a big one somewhere sometime and that it was due.

So many confirmed dead already.

Was quite harrowing reading that their last earthquake of this magnitude in 1939 killed 30,000 people.

The thing that never seems to come across in reports is how magnitude works. Each order of magnitude is 10x bigger than the previous so an 8.0 earthquake is 10x bigger than a 7.0 so 7.8 is a massive one.

That's shocking. I saw on Twitter how one of the 4.0 aftershocks brought down already weakened buildings. Allah know what another 7.7 will have done.

Thankfully the friend I was most concerned about is ok, but I don't know about her family yet (they are in Aleppo and Sanliurfa).

Greece the first country to respond with aid. Even after threats aimed towards Athens by the Turkish president.
Seen a whole large city flattened, scary scenes. Going to look for a reputable aid and rescue response to donate to tonight, clothes and medical aid will be required.
