Transporter Bridge

They're excellent photos.

This might be ignorant so forgive me, and i hope someone with half a brain can reply but if the actual bridge system will never work again, can they not build a road bridge there instead? To keep the iconic main structure in place, even keep the gondola there or somehow build that into a new road system so you drive onto the gondola before you hit tarmac? I'm mid 30s and only ever been over it once in a car, but if they could somehow reopen this access i think alot of folk would use it.
The bridge has structural problems - though not as drastic as sinking on the north bank - that was an incorrect piece of "news" relayed last year.
Presently the engineers are carrying out a long term programme of repairs. Then it will need to be repainted again.
I am part of a committee that meets periodically to overlook progress and seek a solution to the bridge being reopened.
Cost of repair is significant but not as significant as building a new bridge or indeed regularly patching up the A19. There will need to be a debate about the future at some point but it needs to be done with a lot of care and after a lot of careful consideration. For me it is our icon, it has to be restored as a working bridge and that is the aim. Whether that will be a regular road crossing or whether it proves better to have it as a working museum needs proper investigation and consideration. Allowing it to stand still is not an option. Paraphrasing Lennie Lawrence said "you cannot stand still (in football) you either go forward or you fall back."

Thanks for that.
I'd love to have it reopen as a gondola, my kids have never been open and ask all the time if we can go on it and like you said, its our icon.
