Train fares to rise 1.6% in January despite passenger slump

They will use the excuse of less passengers are using the service due to covid, so they need increase costs to cover it

Which in theory is technically right, but yeah...

Train fares / services in this country appalling value compared to mainland europe.

How they can justify being so much more expensive than driving the journey is ridiculous. The tiny windows to get cheap tickets as well is frankly pathetic.

Someone has to subsidise Deutsche Bahn!

Just means you pay more not to get a seat when it's busy😕. I guess it could cover the replacement bus services😉

The current train system is a massive train set. Loads of trains whizzing here and there with nobody on them.

train tickets are outrageous - they should be subsidised, plentiful & dirt cheap (as they are in london, funnily enough) - a disgrace

I believe free competition - abolition of British Rail was the way to go.
Fly the flag and give my money to private profiteers and let my income tax subsidise their shareholders.
The trains are a lot more colourful [though older] and I really enjoy contributing to global warming - riding schitt dirty Cross Country and East Midlands Railway diesel multiple units.
Rule Britannia;)(y)

If there’s an industry that shows the lie of free market competition leading to better service and cheaper prices then it’s U.K. rail, more services providers has lead to increased prices and worse services whilst your tax pound pays for track maintainability.

We pay among the most money in the world for one of the poorest, least reliable, uncomfortable and disrupted transport services going, embarrassing compared to the state run services on offer in many other places.

Does it surprise you we`re at where we`re at?

It's crazy how a train journey from Newcastle to Bristol can be sometimes 10 times the price of a flight for the same journey.

Train fares in UK compared to Europe are shockingly expensive.

I remember looking at a train fare from Budapest to Vienna (Austria) a year or two ago when we were looking at going to Budapest for a long weekend and the price was about £30....can't even get to Manchester from Darlo for that.

The thing is, most MP’s travel first class on expenses so they aren’t affected and therefore incentivised to address this.
