Tradesmen (No-shows)

Has anyone had any experience of this and what’s your thoughts.

On several occasions over the years, I’ve arranged for various tradesman to come and quote for a job, date and time agreed only for them not to show up with not so much as a courtesy bull 💩 excuse.

Now part of me feels that I’ve probably had a lucky escape in that any company with an once of professionalism and customer care wouldn’t have done this.

On the other hand, after I’ve purposely waited-in for someone who had no intention of showing-up, I’m 😡 that they believe their time is more important than mine.

What do people do in this for instance? Forget it, move on and give your business to someone who appreciates your custom? Leave a negative review on their social media profile? Find out where they live and leave and stinking, flaming dog-💩 on their doorstep?

Rant over.

Sometimes I just think their time is money. Many will arrange to quote jobs after finishing a day's graft. Sometimes they may get waylaid but from a professional courtesy point of view that shouldn't stop them sending you a text to rearrange.

Negative review if I can be bothered. As you say, being too busy for the work is fine but making you waste part of your day is just arrogant and inconsiderate.

Happened to me just last week with a plasterer. Said he was coming on friday, arranged for someone to be in all day, got to 10am so texted him and got no answer till 3pm saying he couldnt come. Wouldnt have minded so much if he just text at the start of the day

At least he did text! Commonplace they just don’t reply.

That’s just it T87. No consideration for “your time” and what you might of had to change or reschedule to accommodate said plasterer. That’s what boils my ****!!

I've experienced this. My theory is that in the tradesmans mind it's a big no-no to turn down a job or quote (potential job) no matter how stretched or busy they are. Maybe it goes back to when they started out and they were struggling for work or starting out in a competitive trade.

I recently sent an on line request for a quote to a double glazing company. After hearing nothing back I gave them a call. Their salesfolk were busy , so they took my details and promised to call back.
Heard nothing since.
Imagine what their after sales is like.
I took my business elsewhere.

Boiler service last week, same lad as last year, texted to confirm the night before, never turned up not answered phone or texts.
Oh anyone know a decent plummer to do a standard service cheers

Just forget them and move on. I wouldn't bother posting a negative review, as they probably don't care what you think anyway, or they woudln't have stood you up.

Find a good tradesman, treat them well, pay them on time and you will have a great relationship that you will have no problems telling your friends and family about.

My thoughts exactly, why would you let someone have the job if they cannot be bothered to say they will be late or are not coming that day. We all get caught up in other things.

As you say Billy, treat a good tradesman right, make sure there is plenty of tea and biscuits for them and have their money ready for when they are finished.

* On another note - I was getting the house extended and had completed a one off night shift and was in bed. I heard the bedroom door go (extension was on the other side of the house) and when I looked the plumber was going through our dressing table draws. Needless to say he panicked when I sat up in bed and started screaming at him to get out of the house. The builder, who was a good bloke, came flying up the stairs to see what the commotion was and made him get his tools together and put him off the job.

Leave a negative review. It only takes a couple of minutes and may save someone else a wasted day. Online reviews are increasingly important. The tradesman may not care when he's got plenty of work e.g. WFH conversions etc. When work becomes scarcer he'll notice it. It's just the modern version of people asking their mates "does anyone know a good, reliable plumber?"

They won’t care what you think but they care when their ratings drop online unless they are so busy they don’t need extra work which is of course the case with some but not all.

Every intention of treating them right if they actually come but what if it’s the first time you’ve made contact? Sometimes you have to actually get someone for the first time.

Had a number of builders do that to me when looking at building extension.

Also a number who came said would quote, asked for additional clarification and never bothered submitting a quote. Even chased a couple to see if still interested, said wanted work but didn’t bother with a quote.

Had one guy said he sent it and would resend, never came through so checked it had not gone missing. Said he would look in to it and come back to me, with a text or call to confirm I have received it. That was September last year

Yeah, I know what you mean but I like to get someone that’s been recommended to me rather than a complete unknown. That isn’t always possible but 9 times out of 10 someone you know or on here can recommend someone to you.

True but the good ones are often busy (though if they’re good they’ll have the courtesy to tell you).

To be honest I’ve come to the conclusion that most tradesmen are cowboys . Most turn up late , don’t turn up, do an ok job only etc . I feel like I’m turning into my father in law who unless literally absolutely necessary does things himself . Saying that he’s one of those annoying people who can do almost anything to a great standard whilst my expertise extends as far as a sledgehammer .
I’ve got / had the odd decent tradesperson and we remain loyal and they are great but man it’s like they are all in such a rush to move on to the next job that “ok” job is the new “good”
