Carlisle had been promoted with the Boro and, er, Luton .... plus ça change etc ...
For a few games they were top of Div 1. In those ancient times, partly because of TV regions Carlisle and Middlesbrough were in the same BBC area, so I am not surprised if some Carlisle fans still regard the Boro as a rival.
If I recall Hugh McIlmoyle played for both Boro and Carlisle.

Although 94 miles separate Boro an Carlisle - their accent is similar. Certain vowel sounds are equally prominent. Dont know why, but it reminds me of Boro.

They bear us at our place that week to go top. A week later we went there and won.
McIlmoyle and Laidlaw were in their side.
