Nick Pope banned
Martin Dubravka unavailable
He has already played for another club in this competition.... Man Utd
So they have a choice of two to pick from
Loris Karius 5 games played in the last 2 seasons for Union Berlin
Mark Gillespie 3 games played in the last 3 seasons for Newcastle in the league cup.
Karius has a good record in big finals ;)

Who is Dubravka going to cheering for?
If Man U win he gets a winners medal!
If Newcastle win he gets nowt!

You couldn't make this up

Loaned out Karl Darlow to Hull as well!

I enjoyed watching some of the mags doing somersaults over the weekend trying to prove that it wasn't a sending off for Pope. Yeah, but, no, but....

Can I also say I think they've got some brass neck to be paying full throated tributes to Sir Bobby Robson after they booed him out of their club when it was at its peak.

Finishing 5th with Bobby wasn't good enough, so like a string of managers that followed him, they hounded him out. (n)

Gets nowt? Presumably if (?) Newcastle win, he will get a losing finalist medal.

I've got some sympathy, in that a ban from a number of bookings would apparently not count in the league cup

Can't fathom that at all.

My issue is with the retrospective moaning from the Geordies - it almost reads as if the rules were changed after the match. They weren't, everyone knew them beforehand and they've fallen foul of them.

Can debate the rights/wrongs of the system all day but it's a level playing field where everyone knows the rules in place - discounting the brain dead morons up the road of course.

I think that is to stop players deliberately getting a yellow so they “only” miss a cup game.
Yep exactly that.

The rule was brought in for a very good reason - to avoid clubs manipulating bookings so they used their 'suspension' in games outside of the league.

Gary Lineker on MotD on Saturday was spouting tosh about this rule being wrong - when in fact this is exactly why the rule was put in place...to avoid clubs/players taking the pi$$.

As for Pope being banned for the final - well it's his own dumb fault. It was a ridiculous decision and one that warranted a blatant red card. He only has himself to blame.

Exactly right. It doesn’t matter that Lineker and Shearer both feel sorry for Pope. That’s the objective rule and his own action caused the ban to happen.

"This club was shipwrecked when I arrived," Robson told The SP. "Staff here weren't worried about going into the First Division, they were worried about going into the second.

"They could see this club getting relegated twice. The criticism isn't nice and it isn't right.

"It hurts, it's not pleasant but it's the way things are these days. The game lives on this sort of thing. I know it comes with the territory but I did not expect it at Newcastle."
Utterly shameless fawning this weekend. Conveniently forgetting their shameful actions.
They did the same to Jack too, another of their own.

The myth of Geordie fans being special, of being different, is simply that, a myth.
In truth, they're shirtless, shoeless blebs with an over inflated sense of entitlement.
