Tommy Smith

Who wants to make excuses for Smith today?
Me. As I said on another thread I cannot understand why Smith keeps getting flack on here. He was our only defender covering the whole of the right side with no support from Forss or McNair (who just follows the ball). He even has to come across into the middle to cover McNair. At one point in the second half he intercepted in the middle with two players free behind him. Maybe he should have just stayed on their winger and let their forwards just run through the centre of our defence? Oh, and he also found time to put in the cross for Ramsey’s goal!

For all his qualities, one thing you can say about Smith is that he keeps going and never hides, even if he's having a bit of a nightmare. He put in a good cross for the first and did a really good bit of covering in the middle, when Bristol City had two men behind him waiting for the cross. Thought he showed good character in today.

Symbiotic thoughts!

Smith, decent but likes physicality of a challenge & dives in too much.

Giles best going forwards, like all defenders need to play with his head more, sometimes better to clear the ball than control it.. I know it's not in style now, but it's better than conceding..

He's done great job for us this season but teams are targeting his lack of pace with the diagonal balls and putting one through for their winger to run on to. I just think that with all his leadership qualities we can sacrifice that for the pace of Dijksteel with fry inside of him for cover. As the defense is not working at the minute.

Giles has a good cross in him, but sod all else. His defending is none existing. He is unwilling to take a man on before crossing. He is a very limited player.

I think it's really unfair to judge Smith on the last few games, when he's been great for the most part under Carrick.

He was a free transfer and is a big presence in the dressing room and on the pitch, but he struggles against pace and did again today.

Oddly he kept getting sucked inside, but equally we've not defended well as a team recently, which has left the back four exposed far too much.

Howson and Hackney had much better second halves today, Howson especially.

Smith is an absolute liability, the free kick he gives away that they should score from is criminal, gets humiliated twice

Every team we come against targets that side

The first goal he’s out of position, lunges in and misses the tackle

Second goal he’s all over the place and is very reminiscent of Huddersfield’s second goal, not Engaging at the correct point

Some people think he would be good enough in the prem 😂 honestly they don’t understand football

Have you ever posted on this forum on a post that doesn’t involve Tommy Smith? Getting a bit strange this obsession

Tommy smith has been good for us, but there defo been a shift to target his side since the international break.

I think he’s the weak link in the side at the moment and would be the first position I’d strengthen

It's not just Smith - If we are being realistic about promotion, this defence has conceded 50 goals this season, That has to be improved. Our right hand side was dreadful yesterday and they got in behind nearly every time.

It’s because he’s over covering to make up for McNairs woeful defensive positioning. He doesn’t need to do that when Fry is playing. Unfortunately I was absolutely right about McNair. He’s a fraud.
