Tommy Smith signs 2 year contract

Fair play to him, he's been excellent. Done exactly what's been asked of him. think he would have had more assists if Forss stopped using his overlaps as a decoy

Longer term though, I think this means the end for Dijksteel. Hasn't had a look in under Carrick and I'd expect us to find someone that can challenge Smith for the first team shirt if we are in this division, if we go up we'll have tommy as backup to a better player
I thought Dijksteel had been injured? Could be wrong mind. I think he's a cracking player so hopefully Carrick & co can work their magic on him too.

He's been injured for weeks now, but he wasn't getting much of a look in when he was fit either tbf.

I really liked Dijksteel under Warnock, so it's a shame to see him dropping out of favour again.

Yep, but I think it's possibly a similar situation to McNair in that it's probably more a reflection of the form of others than anything to do with the player himself.

Dijksteel hasn't had a kick under Carrick, but I think that's more to do with the form of Smith who has been class than because Carrick doesn't rate him. Point is we don't know what he thinks of Dijksteel really.

I wouldn't necessarily write him off just yet.

Pretty sure he's been fit for a few weeks now. Was on the bench v Watford and is in the latest training video.

Well deserved. Model pro is Smith, does everything asked of him and does it very well. Really intelligent player as well, timing of those runs from deep has opened teams up time and again this season.

Djiksteel is able back up for me but comparing the two, Smith seems a more natural footballer and more "fluid" with and without the ball. Love Anfernee but I've never once thought he's got the ball completely under control :)

Completely slipped my mind that he'd been on the bench again.

Even more of a shame if he's fit then, but I suppose we're leaning towards attacking players on the bench and we rarely need to bring on defenders.

Dijksteel probably suits 3 at the back rather than a back 4. Smith is a better footballer, whereas Dijksteel is more of an athlete. With the way we are playing, controlling the game and the football, Smith is much better suited to this position, and has made the RB position his own. Great run and that is probably why he got the new contract. If we go up, I'd expect a new quality RB with more pace, but that is for the summer.

yeah it looks like him v Bola for the full back spot and I guess Bola is more valuable if we want to firm things up on the left.

That’s great news - Smith has really made right back his own. I hope that similar discussions are taking place with Chuba, even though we have the option for next year.

The option was already taken up.

I suspect it might be a case of waiting to see where we are first with Akpom.

If we get promoted, he could ask for more and his incredible form this season would give him a strong hand.

If we're not, he'll surely have suitors all over Europe on the back of a great season.

You are probably right. Once we know where we are at the end of the season it will help both parties.
