Tom Butchart Sound It Out

I only had the pleasure to meet the guy on one occasion as I’ve been living in Norfolk since 2000, popped into his shop a few yrs back whilst visiting my late Mum. They say first impressions last, and I can still to this day say how welcoming, warm, and knowledgeable he was. RIP fella.

That film was a reflection of the general malaise many people are suffering. You could see Tom was sensitive to this, a social warrior. Stockton and the North East is a darker place. Hope the folks there, if they desire can continue for the sake of everyone. RIP.

Awww just seen this - awful news, a genuinely lovely guy who knew his music inside and out.
RIP Tom, music here in the North is missing a little piece of its soul.

I had a record shop in Wingate for 4 years from 2015 and Sound It Out were the rivals up the A19. Tom would come in my store maybe 3 times a year and was amazed how neat my store was considering it was a decent size. Collections come in and they need sorting for quality, pricing and adding to racks. It was a labour of love after 58 years working in Injection moulding. Tom felt the same about his shop. he loved it . it was not a job it was a passion. Loved it when he came in unannounced and we chewed the fat about all things vinyl. Many of my customers knew Tom well and always had very very good words. Shocked at his passing . Gone Too Soon ....

I am so Very sad to hear about Tom’s passing. He was a stalwart of Teesside’s music scene. Last year I lost my partner unexpectedly. No health issues. She was 53. When heading up to see my mother( from Manchester) we would always try and call In to sound it out. It was a joy to talk to Tom about music . My partner would talk to Tom about her love of dark gothic and industrial music, I would talk to him about my love of Detroit techno, British electronica and music in general. He was warm and accommodating., Knowledgeable, but willing to learn more. The three of us swapped great musical tips. I cannot express how sad I feel that I am Now the only person left from this occasional triumvirate.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Tom’s loved ones, his family, friends, colleagues and the many people his life touched. He was a lovely man.
RIP Tom, I never met the man but sounds a top bloke. Sorry to hear about your loss el_sid. I too lost my partner unexpectedly last year. Sorry to hear about your loss.

There were hundreds at the funeral. Maybe as many as 150 still stood outside when capacity was reached at the Crem. It was a funeral that included footage from Sound It Out film, introduced by film maker Jeanie Finlay and also a clip from Tom's appearance on BBC Breakfast tv.. It also featured Teenage Kicks from the Undertones and the Star Wars theme.

Everyone seemed to go on to the wake at the Locomotion (Sportsmans) Eaglescliffe where we spilled out into the garden front and back.
It is a very sad and sudden loss for Clare. I hope she can draw some strength and comfort from all those paying their respects to Mr Record Shop. And that number included the great Alan Fearnley too.
