Tokyo Tips

Alright all,

So I'm off on an impromptu trip to Tokyo.

I've never been to Japan.

I know it's expensive but I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible so any tips for that are great. But if there's something expensive and definitely worth it then share also!

Basically anything and everything advice wise.
Bars you've been to and enjoyed.
Good areas to stay.
Good eats.
What to avoid.

All help appreciated, I've had some awesome advice on here travel wise over the years.

If any boro fans live there and fancy a beer or to watch us smash the mackems then please shout up 👍👍👍

Yakitori Alley/Chicken Alley is good fun. There’s a place on a slightly wider footpath next to the railway that is really good. Especially from around 5/6pm ish. When the locals finish work and want cheap food and a drink. It’s the largest of them on that section but still small but there’s around four floors.

The Golden Gai is good fun too. Lots of standing bars.

I expected more of a response from the intrepid community of fmttm!

Living in Hanoi I'm not half bad at avoiding scams. Not wet behind the ears. Just always keen to see what others experience is and any hidden gems.

I went to Tokyo 4 years ago, when I lived in Hanoi, funnily enough!

Shinjuku was a buzzy and the Golden Gai was excellent for a night out, would reccomend as long as you aren't in a group of more than 3.

For areas to explore - Akihabara, the anime/manga, part shop/theme park/ super arcade. It was worth an evening for the people watching alone. Tsukiji Fish Market was also really interesting and also went to chicken alley

I can't remember any restaurant names but the food was brilliant. Every Ramen, noodle, duck dish. We had a lot of bento boxes on the move too.

Quick note though, it is expensive, particularly drinking. We were also budget traveller with SE Asia experience and went mid range for most things, but it was a shock to the system and felt like London prices countrywide. What I would say is that the sheer pride they take in food, means cheap -mid range food is also very good.

We went to Kyoto, Nara & Hakone too if you want tips.

Get yourself one of these as soon as you land. You will see their dispensing machines all over stations and the airport. Basically you load this card with money and it acts not only as a travel card for the metro system and buses it can also be used as like a debt card to buy stuff. Tap in tap out with it.

2. A night out exploring the narrow lanes of bars in Shinjuku. It’s a great way to see old Tokyo at its best. Called the golden Gai you barely squeeze more than 6-10 in a bar but you have your own private barman virtually on hand to serve you. Great way to meet other people.

3. Get off at Odaiba Kaihinkoen station and start a walking tour of the new docklands. There a great view of the rainbow bridge, Statue of Liberty and the robot museum is there.

4. Go to the top of Tokyo Tower for a great view of the City

5. Walk around the park surrounding the Presidential Palace. It’s by the central railway station.

6. Go to the Robot restaurant for some sheer bonkers entertainment in Shinjuku.

7. Walk the busiest crossing in the world outside Shibuya station. It’s the Times Square of Tokyo and full of shops, large gadget stores etc.

8. Visit the Tokyo Art Aquarium for a unique couple of hours. Neon lights a plenty

9. Walk around Akasusabashi and visit the shrine. A fun morning.

If you’re a Seahorses fan, You Can Talk me was shot at the bottom of Yakitori Alley.

Go for a wander around the national gardens.
Experience shibuya station!
Eat some sushi in and around the fish market.
Just go for a wander around shinjuku.
Play baseball at an indoor place.
Eat noodle soup at a street bar.
It can be a very expensive place, but there’s so much to be experienced by simply walking around it’s untrue.

Isetan Shinjuku was a department store I stumbled in. The food court was outrageous. Seriously impressive and seriously good.
