Martin Peagam explores the fascinating story of the workhouses of Stockton and those who occupied them. He asks whether they were really as bad as is portrayed in Oliver Twist, or whether they provided a place of refuge and hope for those who had fallen on hard times, as well as whether we should reintroduce them today.
