This day 1984 the infamous team sheet programme at home to Oldham

Malcolm Allison had been sacked three days previously, the 28th, after becoming under more pressure to sell his better players & he replied with the comment of ''its better for the club to die, than linger on'', not the best thing to say, as we seen 2 years later, but it proved to much for the directors to take & one after step to many for big Mal the board sacked him

I liked Malcolm Allisons time at the Boro, he done wonders with such a small squad of players, allegedly, his comments were to be printed in the following match day programme at home to Oldham on this day 31st March 1984, so no match day programmes were printed, or were & were destroyed with & a match day teamsheet with comments from the chairman replacing the programme which was all that was handed out to the Boro fans on the day

This upset couldnt have come at a worse time for the Boro who were without a win since beating Barnsley 2-1 on the 11th February with a brace from Dave Currie & no home goals since had to pick themselves up, dust themselves down & get the points to pull ourselves away from the wrong end of the 2nd divison

With the crowd of 5,615, our 2nd lowest of the season, 200 up on the previous home game v Fulham, took the required points in a 3-2 win, with goals from Stephen Bell, Paul Sugrue & talisman Heien Otto with their 2nd, 3rd & 5th goals of the season respectively

Jack Charlton had agreed to come in as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season & agreed to manage the Boro the job without pay.
Big Jack, who had left Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season, said that this was the only team he would come back to at this time. He was assisted by Willie Maddren & George Armstrong
George Armstrong was in charge of team selection for the first game against Oldham & recalled Paul Ward to the midfield.

Oldham sat immediately below Boro in the table
The Boro made the perfect start to the game taking the lead after only three minutes.
Stephen Bell neatly lobbed the ball over Oldham keeper Jeff Wealands following a through ball.
After ten minutes Oldham equalised through striker Mickey Quinn
Boro regained the lead after 25 minutes when Paul Sugrue slotted home after being played through
Against the run of play, Oldham equalised after 68 minutes through Tony Henry.
Heine Otto struck within two minutes, sliding in the winner to seal a vital three points.

Though how the front sheet, with an error of the date 21st March, got passed the press room, with the 31st on the back, when the game was played on the 31st is a mystery

On departing the club he met with a number of the players for the last time & told Gary Hamilton, of all the young up & coming players at this club you have the best chance of making it in the game, Gary spoke highly of big Mals reign at the club in his excellent podcast
