When Boro were crowned Anglo Scottish Cup winner (y)

Beating Sunderland 3-2 & Carlisle 4-1 both at AP then drawing at Newcastle to top the group & go in to the knock out stage, 1st off Aberdeen in the quarter finals over two legs, winning 2-0 at AP & 5-2 at Aberdeen, up next & again over two legs the semi final over two legs v Mansfield, the game was probably over in the 1st leg when winning 3-0 at AP, Boro went to Mansfield & won 2-0 & in to the 1st cup final of my lifetime

After winning the 1st leg 1-0 at Ayresome Park, courtecy of an OG, when Strong deflected a Davey Armstrongs header past his own keeper at the holgate end in to the back of the net, we travelled to Craven Cottage putting in a sterling performance drawing 0-0 to win the Anglo Scottish Cup 1-0 over two legs & winning a trophy, doesnt that sound great

I've still got the folded A4 programmes from the Carlisle and Sunderland games.
When we walked to the ground for the Carlisle game we thought we'd got the venue wrong because there seemed to be no none going.

They gave away paper hats with the Boro colours on them before the match Any Ayresome. I was only about 7 and my dad was working away but lived a few streets away so no chance of getting to the match. A lass handing the hats out must have been fed up and bored so gave me hundreds or them which I then sold, not my idea as some fella asked me how much they were and I said a penny 😀. Got a massive bag of candies out of it 👌

I remember sitting in a pub near Putney bridge and some Fulham supporters telling us they couldn't believe we would travel all that way for the Anglo Scottish Cup. I wish they could have seen us celebrating afterwards. I was in seventh heaven as obviously it made us the best team in the country.⚽

I had made the short trip from Guildford where I was at Surrey University, where Boro fans were as rare as.....well I didn't meet many others in 4 years. I had already had to put up with jibes that we were representing Scotland, but it was quite funny that Aberdeen were the only Scottish team we played in the whole run to the final. I remember being very nervous on the way to the ground, with that usual fear bred into all Boro fans that we might mess this up. But when big Jack's teams needed a 0-0, I should have known better. I also recall the Fulham fans moaning that we'd settle a future quiz question about the only team to win a cup without scoring a goal but was I bothered? I was over the moon at the final whistle and seeing Stuart Boam on the lap of honour holding a cup!!! As someone else above said, I'd have celebrated a lot more if I knew I'd have to wait until Cardiff in 2004 to see that again. Anyway, got back to Uni and as preparation for our Hall Christmas party the next night, I found out we'd been gifted a keg of beer, which we tested to make sure it was OK, toasting the Boro's famous Cup win. Happy Days!
