23/03/1974 Boro 1 Oxford 0.

David Armstrong scored his 4th goal of the season & the only goal of the game amazingly with 7 games remaining secured promotion back to the 1st Division
The mighty Boro had made it back after 20 years out out of the 1st division

Between 1954 & 1974, the Boro had Waltee Rowley who took us down, 1952-1954, Bob Dennison 1954-1963, Raich Carter 1963-1966, Stan Anderson 1966-1973 & Big Jack
Harold Shepherdson had 2 stints as caretaker manager

A crowd of 26,877 witnessed the potential champions gain the required points & what Boro fans, home & around the world, had been waiting for since going joint top when, on the 29th September, the Boro beat then leaders Bristol City 2-0

All these years later we're still remembering the 1973-74 team with such affection

I remember hanging around for results elsewhere coming in at the end of the game
before the team came back onto the pitch to celebrate with the fans. I think a couple
of results had to go our way to confirm it otherwise the crowd would have probably a
lot higher if a definate win was required on the day.
Oxford were again the opponents but the occasion lacked the intensity of the 1967
and 1998 games.

Talk of coincidences - I can recall 3 occasions where we have secured promotion by beating Oxford 1967, 1974 and 1998. Any chance we'll play them next season?
