This can't be true, surely?

Oooh...... only just.

Matthews played only one game in 64/65 and Shilton played only one game in 65/66.
So between 1964 + 1966 they played one game each to keep the fact alive

Matthews' last game in 64/65 was the only game he played that season. Stoke only let him play as a goodwill gesture so he could be the first 50 yr old to have played.
(His debut was March 1932, so the run is since the 31/32 season as opposed to 1931)

Then more than 12 months later Shilton made his debut for Leicester in the very last game of 65/66.

Good stat though.

Peter Shilton played in goal the game we got promoted under Robbo.

OK, I'm scratching my head here so help me out: were Boro playing in that match?
I'm pretty sure he wasn't playing for Oxford and, if I remember rightly, we weren't actually playing the day we got promoted in the AP season?

I don't think it would have been as notable if there'd been comfortable overlap between the players listed. :ROFLMAO: ;)
I know, but boy, that was squeaky. Especially the '50th Birthday' game.

Reminds me a bit of my dad.
He played his first, 1st class rugby game in 1959.
He pretty much retired in 1982 but occasionally played for the 2nd or 3rd teams.
Then they let him play for the first team in 1990 so he could have the record of playing in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s.

Matthews didn't play when the war was on of course, but played 10 seasons before it and about 20 after, so we'll say he had it covered, and it was a good reason.

I wonder if there's some lads (old blokes) playing Sunday league who could cover than time period between two of them, I've played for a few clubs at various sports where we've had guys still playing into their 70's with the lower teams etc. Might be possible to cover 100 years with two players, albeit they don't move much when they get into their 60's and they only last about 10 minutes before getting injured.
