According to Times Radio the government is about to announce plans to remove free prescriptions, dental treatment and other health benefits from the unemployed if they're deemed to be not seeking work with sufficient enthusiasm.

What's the strategy here I wonder? Doesn't sound like they're trying to win over the 1.5m unemployed!

Are their focus groups really telling them that this is what will keep them in office?

I would argue that the majority of those they are targeting wouldn't vote Conservative anyway.

I've had to go private for dental treatment after being struck off by my normal dentist during lockdown. I know not everyone can afford to go down this route but the treatment I now receive is 100% better than what I was receiving from my NHS dentist.

From what I read on the BBC website this only applies to those capable of working who haven't made any effort to get a job for 18 months. As a working taxpayer this doesn't strike me as unreasonable.

It depends where they set the threshold for effort. Remember when they attacked the sick? We had people walking miles to the job centre on bleeding stumps and being sanctioned because the lift was out of order so they were 35 seconds late for their appointment.

Here's the article, and I don't disagree. There's no point in having a benefits system if it doesn't adequately support those in need.

So if someone is suffering from mental health issues (perhaps undiagnosed), lack of motivation from a particular life trauma or something of that ilk, starve them of medication and make all their teeth fall out to teach them a lesson? It’s not something I’ll be voting for.

Maybe make people who earn billions but stash most of it in the Cayman Islands pay more for theirs, instead? If we’re strapped for cash.
