I stumbled across this film onPrime last night about a father (Michael Sheen) who gets a message from the French police that his son (Emilio Estevez) met with an accident whilst walking El Camino de Santiago. Sheen's character, Tom Avery, goes over to recover his son's body and decides to do the pilgrimage himself.
I love this line from the film and we all could do with remembering it at times - 'You don't choose a life, dad. You live one'.
I won't go into any further detail than that but this film, which is directed by Estevez with his father in mind to play the leading role is worth a watch.
Cast: Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Jimmy Nesbit, Deborah Kara Unger and Yorick van Wageningen.
I also like this bit of trivia about the film - Martin Sheen originally suggested Michael Douglas or Mel Gibson for the lead role, but Emilio Estevez had written the main character's role specifically for his father and refused to make the film if Martin Sheen did not take part in it. During a screening of the film, Estevez turned to Sheen and said jokingly, "When Michael Douglas sees this, he'll fire his agent."
Is anyone up for doing the walk?
