* The Unofficial "Official" Sunlun v Boro. "TEARS-TEES Derby" [09/24] Match-Day Thread *

Sunderland fan here.

Having listened to our podcast with one of your fans on, who said you like open games but are poor when teams dig in. I went into it hoping it would be a dull game. In terms of getting a result anyway.

And so it turned out. You are going to have to find a way of either drawing teams out more or finding a way through as it's clear teams know how to stop you already.

But you have had a great window by all accounts and it is early days so 20 games from now you might be looking back on a great run.

Looking back, the die was cast in the opening exchange when Edmundson put his foot on the ball with the expectation that Sunderland would initiate their pressing game.

When they just fell back into their shape, Edmundson stood for what seemed like an age, unsure what to do.

Régis Le Bris sprung a tactical surprise, and Carrick chose not to counter it. That's a really poor strategy.

Fair comment. Most on here would agree with you I think. Looks like Regis has got your guys organised, might well be a dark horse this season as the league seems wide open.

If we sack the manager it’s usually around October half term so Carrick might be getting twitchy if we lose two out of the next three!

We call you mutants not aliens mate.......

🙃

But fair comments and welcome to the board!

We are getting worse rather than better. That was atrocious. The players we have brought in the summer ti address the problematic left hand side are not working. I think we are almost missing Greenwood and he was bang average
Rewind 12 months and the feeling was far more negative than now.

It's still early days and there's a lot of positives, but equally work to do too

I've never seen us as automatic contenders, as a starting point I always just assume that the relegated Prem teams and anyone else with parachute payments will be strong and see if we can force ourselves in somewhere. The league doesn't look as strong at the top at present though.

We weren't that great today but apart from Plymouth game we do look organised and have plenty of players all over the pitch who can get odd goals. It's all ifs and buts, but I think we are a half decent striker away from properly competing.

Sides who can marshal games when they ain't free flowing are usually up there at the season's end. Dogged consistency with a smattering of quality can take a team far in this league.

Your boys did a disciplined job on us today.

am convinced the team is just poorly coached

how'd we go a full 75-80 minutes letting Roberts come inside? that should have been drilled into them on the training ground all week

as soon as the game started they had a man sat on hackney so playing out was never going to work. straight away we should've had LL running the channels going after diagonal balls - get the defence turned, play to LL's strength

2 midfielders vs 3 hasn't worked for a long time. remember last season our form turned around when carrick was pushed into playing 3 at the back?

Gilbert not even making the squad is actually awful and the biggest point of contention to me, that lad should be our starting 10 every week

Totally agree with this. I wasn’t impressed with them to be honest, but I don’t suppose I was meant to be. I’d read they were dominating games against Burnley for instance and expected them to come at us and try to dictate play. But Regis the Circumcised (I think that’s the correct translation but I don’t speak French) was smart and perhaps brave in adopting the “low block” approach used so frequently and effectively against us.

Apparently Gilbert is injured, out for 2 months

Welcome to the board Alienvisitor. Can't disagree with anything you've said, you did a job on us today so fair play. One thing's for sure, you will get treated with a lot more respect than Boro fans do on the SMB forum so feel free to post whenever you like 👍.

I think "the boys are in a good place" is wearing very thin right now.
They are probably in Macdonald's.
Hackney was woeful today. Perhaps McGree in his place might have added some zip and urgency?
As mentioned earlier, Gilbert would have been a better start.
This possession game is a waste of time when we pass the ball around the goal area, make over 140+ goal attempts so far this season [the highest in the Championship by a country mile] and have scored 6 goals!
We looked laboured, ponderous, sluggish, slow and clueless.
No one had the balls to pull the trigger in the box.
It was like players were too nervous about having a go and failing.
Latte Lath up front might as well been a lighthouse: with no service, he was left on his own.
Conway was in the same boat.
Jones hasn't had a consistently good 90 minutes since the season started.
It's time to stop being "nice" and "calm", and kick a few arzes, drop some of our under-performing players and turn up the heat on "the boys".

Edmondson should have called their bluff and sat on the ball for 10 mins

Fair comments. I thought you had a gameplan and stuck to it well. Could see early on into the game that you weren't going to get drawn into pressing us, much as we tried to tempt you.

Oh, and f**k off ;)
