Its not just that time again......
Its the dawning of a new era.

It was a relief when Michael Carrick officially became the new "Head Coach" just four days ago. It was almost overtaken by the announcement that former Manager - Jonathan Woodgate, would be taking over as First Team coach. We now have a Coaching staff comprised of Mackem`s, Smoggies and Skunks - all taking us to the Premier League!!! (y)

In training and in his various media conferences, Carrick comes across as a man who knows what he wants. He`s a man who understands that relationships between players and also between staff and players, is the key to success. He made the point of emphasising the word "respect" - ensuring that everyone knows how to behave appropriately and valuing one another. Unlike some recent coaches - he is physically fit and focused on leading by example from the front. Even when engaging in training, he got into the play and made sure the lads understood what he wanted them to do. Definitely a "hands - on" man, he spoke of being "on the grass" [pitch], giving players time to show what they are capable of. No standing back and watching - he involved players and staff from the off.

His coaching experience began back in 2018 at old Trafford - alongside Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He`s no novice when it comes to working with some of the biggest and best in world football. Remember the last time we had Mourinho`s assistant doing a job for the Boro?!

Michael`s career is littered with success - five times Premier League Winner, a Europa League Winner, and a Champions League winners medal, plus 38 appearances for England at Senior Level.

Ironically, he started as a boy, playing for the renowned Wallsend Boys Club and even played for Boro - as a 9 year old. After signing for West Ham under Harry Rednapp, he was thence to join Manchester United - where he stayed for 11 years. No doubt some [if not all] Boro players will be looking in awe of the new boss. He made his debut for the England Senior team in 2001 - when some of the current squad were in short pants!

Carrick backed Woodgate, saying they "clicked" from day one. Asked if anyone else was joining his staff - Carrick was none-committal, saying things will take their course. He wouldnt be drawn on how he operates by one inquisitive journalist, who almost answered his own question for him. Incidentally - the press conference was the most crowded its been in many years - one journalist comparing it to the time when Boro signed Bryan Robson. The ticker tape on social media was definitely on overtime.

So its on to his first game as "Head Coach" - against Preston. We all know what happened last time we played there: it was the last game of the season and even though we were thumped - we finished 7th - though by a wide margin from 6th place.

Carrick admitted hes been watching the team for a number of weeks and already has a good idea of our relative strengths and weaknesses. We await with baited breath to see his team and his formation. Hopefully the confidence will be back - even Neil Bausor said - upon Carrick`s arrival - players and staff already had a "spring in their step".

We can start Carrick`s tenure with three points against Preston and start the climb up this table.
Nothing is impossible!

Up The Mighty Boro(y)

Preston North End are the most boring club to watch in the entire Championship.

Emil Riis has been short on goals this season - so far he has scored 4.

Before their 4-2 defeat away to Blackpool last time out - they had scored 9 and conceded 10 goals in 16 outings.

Preston season so far:

Home form includes three defeats, one victory and a draw.
Preston have scored only two goals at home all season [so far]!
They have a habit of putting a brick wall up at the back - soaking up the pressure and trying to hit teams on the counter - but so far, that strategy has yielded very little reward.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stats and Facts:

The rock-solid Preston North End defence that kept seven consecutive clean sheets to open the campaign is no more than a distant memory, as they’ve now conceded 71% of their league goals this term across their last five games (W2, L3).

A heavy 4-2 defeat in the West Lancashire derby against Blackpool last time out was particularly painful, though boss Ryan Lowe was seemingly unable to accept reality for fact when stating “it definitely wasn’t a 4-2”.

Lowe may have had a point as his side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession as well as more shots on goal, yet it’s clinical edge in the final third that the Lilywhites are lacking. Returning to Deepdale is unlikely to inspire confidence on the goal scoring front either as Preston have won just once here all season (D4, L3), and that’s despite keeping a joint league-high four home clean sheets.

A new era dawns for Middlesbrough with the appointment of Michael Carrick as their new boss. Former Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate also re-joined his boyhood club as a first team coach and the pair will now attempt to resurrect Boro’s floundering promotion bid after a rocky start to the season (W4, D5, L7) sees them outside of the relegation zone by virtue of goals scored alone ahead of the round.

1666982047448.png
Having made 464 appearances for Manchester United, Carrick is set for his first senior coaching role since a three-game stint as United’s caretaker manager (W2, D1). There is a sense of cautious optimism around the new boss given Boro’s history of success when giving ex-United personnel their first roles in senior management. Bryan Robson achieved promotion to the top-flight, before Steve McClaren guided Boro to League Cup glory and a European final!

Players to watch:

1666981695420.pngOne of Boro’s big summer targets Emil Riis will seek to punish his potential suitors after scoring in two of Preston’s last three wins and netting a brace in the last H2H.

Trying to outdo him will be Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom who looks a revived force since returning from his loan spell in Greece and has netted in their last two away wins.

Gaffer Calls For Patience Ahead Of Boro Game

Ryan Lowe is asking for his players and supporters of the club to not get too frustrated as PNE look to turn their home fortunes around.

North End are back at Deepdale on Saturday for the visit of Middlesbrough, and they’ll be looking to improve on their record there, having taken seven points from eight matches in PR1.

While he’s very keen for his side to start taking more from their home games, Ryan feels it’s important that his players play with an element of patience in order to do so.

He told iFollow PNE: “You want that home form to get up, but there’s got to be a bit of patience.

“Teams are coming to us and have come to us – you look back to the Rotherhams and the Hulls who sat everyone behind the ball and stopped us scoring, which was good for them but not so good for us.

“We need to make sure we don’t get too frustrated. My message to the players is don’t get too frustrated, be nice and calm.

“My message to the fans will be don’t get frustrated, stick with the boys and get behind them because it’s going to be important that collectively as a group – whether that’s the players, the fans, the staff around – we all need to be a little bit patient going forward because this league is a tough league and as you’ve seen anyone can beat anyone.”

This weekend PNE will come up against a Boro side who will be managed by head coach Michael Carrick for the first time, following his appointment earlier in the week.

As is the case with all new managers and head coaches, he will no doubt be going in there to implement his own ideas.

Ryan added: “They’re a good team, and they’ve got some good players.

“Michael’s gone in there to put his stamp on it. I think there’s been reports the past few games that he’s picked the team anyway and the formation, so I think we know what we’re expecting.

“We’re expecting a tough encounter of course, as we always are, but it’s one we’re looking forward to to get back on the bike, as I’ve said many times, to try and get a result, and that’ll be our focus.”

Carrick’s side arrive hovering dangerously above the division’s bottom three, but with the quality in their ranks there will be high hopes that it’ll be the other end of the league they’re challenging come May.

A few positive results on the bounce can almost change the course of a season as things stand, such is the nature of the division, and that’s something Ryan is well aware of.

The manager said: “I know there’s a lot of frustration not just at Preston North End but every football club up and down the divisions – let alone the Championship – because everyone wants to be doing so well.

“If you look at the Championship table, it’s so tight, isn’t it? Two wins catapults you straight up to third or fourth, and two losses catapults you down.

“I think in Middlesbrough’s case, they’re only a couple of wins away from trying to get back up because they’ve got a good fanbase, a good club and they’ve got some good players, and now they’ve got a young manager who’s going to want to do as well as he possibly can.”

The manager also provided a team news update ahead of the weekend, with Greg Cunningham expected to be available following a sickness bug, while he also provided an update on Andrew Hughes, who missed the weekend’s defeat at Bloomfield Road.

Ryan said: “He had something up with his thigh. He wasn’t aware of it until after the Huddersfield game, and then obviously ahead of Saturday we got it looked at and it wasn’t good.

“He’s out on the grass today (Thursday). Whether he’ll be ready for Saturday we won’t know until tomorrow, but he’s recovering and healing quite well.

“Whether he’ll be ready for Saturday we’re not too sure yet, but we’ll give him every possible chance.”

Hot stat: Boro have kept as many clean sheets (two) since Chris Wilder’s sacking (W2, D1, L2) as they did in the opening 12 competitive games of the season.

Great stuff roofie . Many thanks .
Just thinking our new guy is very experienced for one so young .

cheers roofie. I thing PNE will shut us out, but, they are hardly prolific themselves. It will be a low scoring game you have to think. I know they have started leaking goals a bit, but we aint exatly setting the world alight in front of goal.

0-0 or 1 goal in it either way for me.

1-0 will do.
I cant imagine even Carrick has turned our players round this quick.......but you never know. They could surprise us?

"Do I look like an angry Scotsman"?

* Carrick`s response to a question about what he learned from Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

“Michael’s gone in there to put his stamp on it. I think there’s been reports the past few games that he’s picked the team anyway and the formation, so I think we know what we’re expecting.”

- First I’ve heard of this?

What do we reckon, any surprises in the line-up today?

He’s gonna play 4-2-4 and play all the forwards we have in an attempt to break down their defence. In reality likely 4-3-3, fancy us to win 2-0.
