It's that time again.......

When thoughts turn to the possibilities of getting to Wembley and maybe repeating 2004 all over again?!

Carabao Cup. Leeds v Middlesbrough. Elland Road. KO: 20:00 hrs.

Michael Carrick

I think you want to play in atmospheres that are a little bit hostile, a little bit prickly, a little bit fiery!

[From his most recent media conference]

Michael Carrick would have no talk of giving players “minutes” or not attaching any less importance to tonight's Carabao Cup game than any other. He isn't phased by stepping into the three-game-week as soon as the season has started.

[The players] ….they're desperate for games, the timing feels right so we're quite happy with having three games this week, so that's what we're here for.

Boro Fans Tickets Sell-Out and being ready.

It's a proper game. We've sold out our allocation, so we take as many as we can down there, and we're looking forward to it. You know, we've got a really good game ahead of us so we've prepared well, the boys are ready for it. And yeah, as I said, we're looking forward to going down there and attack and what is a really good cup tie.

Not just another cup-tie.

Personally, I don't see it as [just] a cup game, so we'll just kind of fill it up. I think it's what we need to be strong as a group moving forward as well …….and the fact we want to go there, and we want to try and win the game. You know, we're not going there just to play a game, we're treating it as a proper game.

Certainly, the three points on Saturday against Swansea provides continuation of the momentum the team created towards the back of last season. It could also act as a platform going forward in tonight's cup game. Carrick acknowledged the importance of Saturday's victory and the effect of last season's Carabao Cup run on the confidence of the players. Tonight may give us the opportunity to further build our confidence and set us on the right path. It was only the first game, and players need the first few games to bed in and sharpen match fitness. Nevertheless:

Swansea:

I was really pleased the way the boys went about it so it certainly gives us a good feeling it's l it's one game you know lets it is what it is, but certainly it's uh it's good that we've won it, and we're just trying to keep building on that.

Leeds.

Leeds are undoubtedly a strong side, even after the pre-season departures of Archie Gray to Spurs for £41.25M , Crysencio Summerville to West Ham for £23.4M and Luis Sinisterra to Bournemouth for £23.4M. Altogether they recouped £116.2M`s from outgoings, but their most significant arrivals are centre-back Joe Rodon from Spurs and right-back Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United.

In spite of the bookies making them top contenders for promotion, the hype didn’t prevent them being behind 3-2 at home to Portsmouth on Saturday, before a fortunate penalty in the 95th minute [!] saw them grab the equaliser. It may have been “frantic”, but conceding three goals gives us hope going into tonight.

Rivalry.

Carrick understands the importance of a good atmosphere in games like tonight and revels in it:

I like the sense of rivalry in in in a good way and the healthy rivalry and competitiveness about it. Historically the traditions.......I think that's what makes our game such a beautiful game in so many ways…..the Players certainly respect that. For sure, they know what it means to the supporters, so yeah we'll go there fully respecting the game looking forward to it and the boys….they can't wait for it.

“Second string”?

Sometimes teams are accused of playing “second string” players at this stage of the season and competition. But Carrick is a winner and wouldn't hear of excuses or of protecting “first team” players from injury by giving fringe players “minutes”. He has faith in every member of the squad to do the job and getting “the balance right”. It's not just giving “the lads a game”.

Whatever team we put out it's not taking game lately or anything I think we had a good cup run last season, and we want, or we're trying we understand it'll be tough this one but we we we want to try and go something similar because it was a fantastic run and so many people had a great time and created some great memories.

Is it likely that Micah Hamilton will be involved?

Micah is involved….. We're managing him and settling him in. I think it's a big change…..you know, having been at [Manchester] City since he was young, since he was six or seven years old. So it's a big change moving up here and having a bit of a stop-start last couple of weeks really having been away and then not training a little bit last week, so we'll be careful [that] we manage him right. But…... it's great to have him, and hopefully we can get him on the pitch tomorrow [Wednesday] night.

Where will Carrick play Micah?

[He] can play off the left, no problem. You can play [him] as a 10. He can play off the right, so I'm not going to pigeonhole him…. at this stage. I think the obvious one so early would be off the right a little bit, but really…. I don't just see him as that role. I think….. It's a big change for Micah you know coming here, so I think we can see him develop probably as the season goes. But certainly I wouldn't put him in just one spot like a number of other players, to be honest.

Is Carrick still looking to strengthen our squad before the window closes?

Listen, we've got the squad we've got at the moment and to be honest we're happy with that. Listen…..[In] the transfer window sometimes things happen but as it stands now…... where really Happy. If ones come in [and] they might come in, they might not come in, but we're certainly working to improve the squad. There's still a bit of time left yet, but certainly at the moment I'm I'm happy with what we've got.

Finally, about tonight's match:

I think you want to play in atmospheres that are a little bit hostile a little bit prickly a little bit fiery I think that's fantastic that's the passion that's what emotion the football bring so that's why I think it's going to feel like a real game…….

You would have to be at least 70 years old to remember the last time Boro played Leeds in either the FA Cup or the League Cup1 astonishing, but true. Our Cup meetings since the Second World War amount to five, including a replay.

FA Cup 3rd Round

5th January 1946

Result: 4-4 Draw at Eland Road.

Our team that day included George Hardwick, Johnny Spuhler and Michael Fenton.

FA Cup 3rd Round [Replay]

9th January 1946

Result: Boro 7 Leeds 2 at Ayresome Park.

Michael Fenton
and Johnny Spuhler got a hat-trick, whilst George Hardwick put the icing on the cake.

FA Cup 3rd Round

6th January 1951

Result: Leeds 1 Boro 0

In goal that day was Rolando Ugolini, with Lindy Delapena and Wilf Mannion in the starting line up.

FA Cup 4th Round

16th March 1963

Result: Boro 0 Leeds 2

Boro`s team that day included Alan Peacock, Mel Nurse, Gordon Jones and Billy Horner.

FA Cup 3rd Round

9th January 1926

Boro 5 Leeds 1.

James McClelland* scored all five goals for Boro!

* In the 1925 / 26 season, "Jimmy" McClelland was Boro`s top scorer with 32 goals in 38 games! Due to injury, his mantle was taken over by the legendary George Camsell, who scored 59 goals the next season and remained top scorer with Boro for ten years in a row! In the end, Camsell scored 345 goals in the red and white in 453 games from 1925 to 1939. The outbreak of the Second World War curtailed the league system, and Camsell effectively retired. Camsell deserves an article all to himself. A true legend.

Wasn't a happy bunny with his team conceding three goals against Portsmouth in the league on Saturday and suggested that changes may be made, not simply because it's early doors in the Carabao Cup:

After conceding three goals at the weekend, does that make you reassess the amount of changes you might want to make in the defence tomorrow night because you want to encourage them to form relationships and maybe just prove that they're better than what they showed at the weekend. Yes that's a good question because normally in the beginning of the season I don't like to rotate too much because I believe that sometimes especially when you have a few changes within the group, and we had a few um you need also bit to come into your rhythm and to find the right optimism within the players. I'm a big believer to rotate even a bit later during the season but overall I have to say so when I also regard our last game um we have conceded too many goals....

He was certainly quite defensive about his team's performance, and claimed they didn't concede from being too open in their play. He inferred that he already feels pressure from Leeds fans by claiming they don't know about the effects of criticising young players or the loss of various players from last season. It's always nice to know the Manager has connection with the fans!

Boro:

First of all we know that we face we one of the for me best sides of in this league so for me, they're also one of the favourites to finish in the top six at least, and it's definitely a really good side, and they spoke about their ambition. They have a really good coach and the real quality players. I think also a good blend out of experience and exciting young player sand we know also from last season how tight and competitive the games were, and they will come with confidence after first win. They will come also with confidence after a proper cup run also in the last season, and they know yeah that you can sometimes even celebrate some magic nights in this Cup competitions. And they will try to repeat this again, and for that we are pretty, pretty respectful. But we are also highly motivated we know that when we are at our best so we have a great chance also to go into the next round and I expect on both sides also a few changes yes we will see what the outcome is, but I expect a tight game.

From listening and reading his media conference transcript, he appears to have concerns not just about various players' performance on Saturday, but upon whether some players have yet settled into the side and singing off the same hymn sheet.

Welcoming Luke Ayling to Elland road?

It's always a bit strange to welcomege to Luke here especially in the home at Ellen Road uh not in our shirt because for me, he's a club Legend what he has done for this club is unbelievable he was a key player in the last decade and also responsible to bring this club back into the Premier League and also with the unbelievable first season on Premier League level. I have spoken so often and so much about Luke, what I think about him as a player and how much I would have liked uh to have him more or less in his prime. Even three or four five years earlier um and also what I think about him as a person, a teammate and as a colleague he's an outstanding character. And definitely one of the best I've ever worked with character-wise also for a team and yes I know that um he's also always desperate for us to win games and to be successful.

He's also professional'm pretty sure if he plays tomorrow he will give his best to make his team successful because he's an unbelievable professional. But I know that deep in inside he also always feels for us and wants us to succeed. It always feels a bit strange then to yeah see and also to in a different shirt. But on the personal level it's always great to see him because he's unbelievable character and unbelievable great guy and I always love to see him ....... I also have to say I think we found it's always difficult when such a club Legend [leaves the] Club. I have to say how he behaves, I also think how the club has more or less behave because, when he came and asked if he can leave....... because he wants more playing time, especially because his contract was running out. We were a bit short on the right back position, but we got the feeling no he earns it that we allow him this move because he has done so much for the club....

And after that excellent praise and almost tearful "goodbye", Farke stressed his desire to press on and build a successful team for a successful season. Leeds are into their second attempt to get back into the Premiership. Let's not forget, they spent 15 years out of the top flight before regaining a spot alongside the "big boys". They didn't find it easy the season they were relegated, and they lost out last season. They had a leaky defence, but could fight back [we should have beaten them at the Riverside....].

Farke`s Final Words on Tonight:

We have along season and two Cup competitions and want to be as successful as possible in cup competitions, and we need all the players, so for us, it won't be that we just have 11 key players so we need to have at least 16 17 key players [to do the job].

I know this is potentially stating the bleeding obvious, but the outcome will be decided by the manager picking the strongest team. Both managers will make changes but the amount will be key, and I often wonder if they speak beforehand about numbers of changes rather than actual names etc, I may be over thinking it though.

Derby played last night and we meet in the early kick off slot on Saturday so not much time for recovery. I’d make wholesale changes at least 9 and keep legs fresh for Saturday where possible. No extra time is a good thing. I don’t want to lose, but equally if we do I wont be too bothered this year despite it being Leeds.

Yep pretty much how I feel. Saturday is the bigger game. Wednesday fixture then 12.30pm Saturday. Squad to come in.

Round - Up from Last Night's Results:
Shooting football football-1406106_1280.jpg

Blackburn Rovers appear to be on fire at the moment in the goal-scoring department: they tonked a relatively strong Stockport County side 6–1. Last season's top scorer, Szmodics, is expected to leave Blackburn before the transfer window closes, but it certainly isn't affecting his attitude and performance: he netted two last night. Bolton beat promoted Mansfield Town 5-4 on penalties, whilst Coventry scraped by with a 1-0 win at Bristol City. Queens Park Rangers dumped Gary Monk's Cambridge United 2-1. Meanwhile, a measly, 8538 fans turned up to see Derby County beat local Derbyshire rivals Chesterfield 2-1. Fleetwood sprung a shock, beating West Bromwich Albion, but Albion's Manager Carlos Corberan showed little respect for the competition by making eleven changes to his team, which beat QPR 3-1 on Saturday. Norwich played out a banging 4-3 victory against Stevenage with former Boro loanee, Hernandez, scoring a brace. Sunderland were another side which made wholesale changes and paid the price with a 2-0 defeat to Preston. Despite all the shenanigans at Preston, with the Manager leaving after the very first game [!] Sunderland are left "concentrating on the league" until the next defeat, when they will be hoping to keep their current Manager and hope they can keep more than a two-bit pub team together. In other news, Sheffield United pumped four past Hollywood [Wrexham] at Bramall Lane, which keeps Chris Wilder in his job for now.(y)

Yes. Farke seemed more concerned with the problems he has with his own players and those missing last season through injury - quoting Bamford as an example. Carrick is more pragmatic and aims to win every game. Much will depend on how Leeds show up, but it seems Micah Hamilton could get a chance to put the West Yorkshire outfit to bed. A run in the cup will do us no harm, even if the likes of Gilbert, Finch, Barlaser, McCabe, Coburn and Burgzog are in the starting line up.

Tonight's Other Caraboa Cup Fixtures:

Hull City v Sheffield Wednesday [KO: 19:45 hrs].

Hull
scraped a 1-1 draw with a late penalty against Bristol City on Saturday and are still adapting to their new Manager's philosophy [Tim Walter] after the departure of Liam Rosenior. Hull have also seen a number of key players leave, including Jacob Greaves to Ipswich for £21.5M and Jaden Philogene to Villa for £16M.

The Owls pumped four past Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle on the opening day of the season, and Danny Rohl will be looking for a positive result on Humberside.

Plymouth v Cheltenham [KO: 1945 hrs].

Wayne Rooney
will be looking for a quick turn-around in confidence and have a chance to show the home fans what they can do, against a Cheltenham side who kicked off the season with a 3-2 victory over Newport County.

Howson at CB then. I am happy he has gone the way he has. I think we will win comfortably 3-0 😉, I haven’t seen Leeds team mind, but meh, Saturday and 3 points are more precious

Leeds bench Gnoto, James and Georginio which is a big plus. But still, I’d agree they start favourites.

Edit: have they gone 3 up top?!!

It doesn't seem like Boro nor Leeds are putting out a "second string" side or using "fringe" players, in spite of some predictions. Pleased that we take all games seriously, unlike some of those Managers last night - who disrespected their loyal fans and devalued the competition for their own selfish reasons.

We were a stupid price at tea time 7.8, which I took.down to 6.6 now. 4.6 would be closer to the real price.

Not advocating gambling in any way shape or form BTW.
