What a difference three goals and a home win makes! The first since the turn of the new year. When it all seemed over, Boro pulled out a deserved victory in front of the lowest league crowd of the season [23,545]. For a mid-week game at this time of year, that's pretty good. A look round at most other attendances shows our crowd are still well up there. The lads know they can rely on us to back them home and away. Tomorrow is no different. Those travelling to QPR will be hoping we can take that momentum forward and bring back three more valuable points.

We owe them, not least because we have beaten the "R"s only twice in ten games since 2019! We beat them last season in February [3-1], but we have to go back to February 2019 for our previous victory: 2-0 at The Riverside with goals from Ashley Fletcher and Jonny Howson. That result pushed us up into 5th place after 33 games on 57 points. Four points clear of Bristol City in the last play-off place and, three points behind West Brom in fourth. Rangers were 18th at the time. Nine points clear of the drop zone.

This QPR side have hit a rich vein of form since January, having had a dreadful start to the season. Gareth Ainsworth, sacked at the end of October, hadn't managed to turn the team's fortunes around and Spaniard, Marti Cifuentes was appointed at the end of November. Since then, Rangers have got their self-belief back. On 20th January, they beat Millwall [2-0], and have lost only one to Stoke City [1-0] in nine games! Their wins have included a thrilling 2-1 at Leicester's King Power Stadium, Rotherham [2-1], Bristol City [1-0] and Blackburn Rovers [2-1]. The remaining draws include West Brom [2-2], Norwich City [2-2] and Huddersfield [1-1]. Now in 19th place and only a point off the drop, they have hauled themselves out of the swamp, where they were relegation "certainties" before Christmas.

Michael Carrick said on Friday, before the team departed to London:

[Norwich]... was a big win for us. It gives the lads a boost and something to build on, really. Some of the good performances haven't got rewarded [and] we needed a little something to go away with. Kind of...the boys have done a lot of work and a lot of effort, showed a lot of character really in recent times, so it was nice for them to get a reward, and capitalise what came to us really with ten men. So, the boys took it really well and, finished really strongly.

It was certainly impressive, the way we shook off the first nervy ten minutes and upped our game. It was pleasing to see Latte Lath enjoying his game and Forss powering that goal from inside a packed area. Perhaps the best goal of the night and the best confidence-booster was that superb effort by Lucas Engel. He deserved all the plaudits after that. He worked hard, as did the whole team.

Perhaps two important factors in the run in are the presence of Jonny Howson and Isaiah Jones. Back in the squad, Howson has been sorely missed and Carrick explained Jones hadn't done much training up until Wednesday, so didn't risk him in the starting line up:

Jonny's obviously a big part of the group, he's the Captain, and he leads by example, and he has a big presence within the group. So, it's great to have him back. We thought he'd be out a lot longer, so it was a big boost. Having Izzy back and around it again was good. He hadn't really trained much, so it wasn't worth pushing it that little bit with Izzy [as] the game was really done by then. Nevertheless, he's back around it and looking to get involved, which is great.

Tuesday is going to be another test against Birmingham at St Andrews, followed by the home game on Saturday 16th March against Blackburn Rovers. It's a quick turn around, and it's going to be good if we can build on that Norwich victory. With nine points available in this week, we can hope to make a fist of it and fight to win each game. Carrick acknowledges that lack of consistency has been our problem thus far, but it sounds like we can expect the spine of the team to remain the same, at least for this week:

For loads of different reasons, we haven't been able to pick consistent teams over the course of the season, so it's always finding a balance. [With] three games coming up in a short space of time, we'll make the best of it now we've got a few bodies back.

I've said it for a while, consistency is the key, it's massive, putting them runs together and the [teams] that have done that are the ones higher up the league. We've shown we can beat anyone, we can produce [good] results and performances. We just got to do it on a regular basis.

Their Gaffa appears a bit worried about us. His team is on the rise, but one defeat could knock them back, especially with the amazing change in fortunes of Sheffield Wednesday after four straight wins, although they lost to Leeds on Friday night. It's still tight at the bottom, where two out of a possible eight will be joining already relegated Rotherham. We won't be amongst that number, for sure. We still look up the table and hope. It's never over until it's over.

Come On Boro!

QPR head coach Martí Cifuentes spoke with cautious optimism once more as Rangers ready themselves for Saturday's visit of Middlesbrough to W12.

Martí's men head into the game on the back of Wednesday's exciting 2-2 home draw with West Brom. The R's have been beaten just twice in 10 matches in the Sky Bet Championship.

However, as Rangers prepare to welcome Michael Carrick's Boro, Cifuentes was keen to point out our visitors' goalscoring record away from the Riverside this season - only bettered by league leaders Leicester City currently.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's fixture, he said: "These kinds of weeks are very demanding, both physically and mentally. I was very happy with the way the lads dealt with Wednesday's game, to concede twice with just the two shots from West Brom was very tough.

"We ran a lot on Wednesday - it was a very high-tempo game which was fun to watch and coach, but it has been about recovery ever since. We face a tough clash with Middlesbrough tomorrow now, who are a good side and have been doing very well away from home.

"They have scored the second-most goals away from home this season, only behind league leaders Leicester, so we know the quality they have.

"It is a relentless league, it is almost impossible to predict every weekend - most teams are fighting for something. A crazily high amount of points will be needed to avoid relegation, and that shows how competitive the league is. We need to be aware that even though we are in a good trend, progressing and getting better and better, we haven’t achieved anything yet.

"The team have been fantastic in recent games and are getting better each week, but we have to keep improving to achieve our target – we must remain humble as there is a lot of work still to do.

"We have a clear idea of how we want the team to play. I felt we showed everything I wanted on Wednesday–we were playing at a high intensity and troubled a really good side who are pushing for the play-offs. The relationship with the fans was also clear to see, which is a very nice and rewarding feeling."

Sam Field was at the double against former side West Brom in midweek.

Midfield partner Jack Colback's return from a two-game ban this weekend gives Cifuentes a welcome selection headache - with Martí adding: "To have internal competition is one of the best recipes for having a successful team.

"It raises standards in training and on the pitch, it’s a headache for me but a good one to have. Credit to the guys because they continue to push each other and those are the little things that we continue to look for.

"We have to use the skills of the players depending on each game and utilise everyone in the right way, it is more usual to rotate high up the pitch but the players who haven’t been playing continue to give us something whenever they jump in. They continue to produce excellent performances and give us options all over the team.

"Despite the quality and competition we have in midfield, Sam for instance is showing that he is a reliable and countable player - he came back from suspension against Bristol City and did so well straight away. He could have had a hat-trick on Wednesday, and that helps to ensure everyone remains at their best level, which is a luxury problem."

I've never told you this before Roofie...but thank you. I always read these threads every week but now I have a bit more time to appreciate them and the work you put in to it, epic mate x
Steady on legz, they are ok.

Morning roofie.

Stan Bowles

1709970062304.png
Stan Bowles, born 24th December 1948 in Manchester, began his career at Manchester City in 1967. But, after three years, he moved on to Bury, Crewe and Carlisle United. At City, Malcolm Allison was the Gaffa and he and Stan didn't get along. But when you consider the City side at that time, Bowles stood little chance of getting ahead of Francis Lee. Throughout his playing days, Stan had issues with gambling and alcohol, highlighted frankly and honestly in his Autobiography.

But it was his move to London which made him a house-hold name in English football.
1709972085017.png
He became synonymous with Queens Park Rangers, whom he joined in September 1972 for what was then a big fee of £112,000’s. In the other direction, Rodney Marsh left Loftus Road to join Manchester city. What a swap! It's hard to know which was the better player, but Stan found his football home down south. He wore the number 10 shirt. In total, Stan made 255 appearances in the blue and white hoops, scoring 70 goals. He played a crucial role in the "R"s becoming League One runners-up in the 76/77 season [Now The Premiership]. This meant Rangers went into Europe for the first time, with Bowles setting a record at that time - scoring 11 goals in the campaign. Bowles became and was to remain a cult hero at Loftus Road, and is still revered by club and fans alike.

1709972164022.png
Bowles made five Senior International appearances for England whilst at Rangers, scoring two goals. He played under Sir Alf Ramsey, Joe Mercer and Don Revie.

In 79, Stan fell out with new Manager Tommy Doherty, with the Scot forcing him to play with the reserves. For a player of such stature this was an insult and Doherty wasn't liked by the fans for his treatment. Stan moved on to Forest for a season [79/80] but didn't settle after making just 19 appearances, scoring two goals. Spells at the Orient and Brentford followed, with him eventually retiring at the grand old age of 36.

In 2015, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

1709973707963.png
Stan Bowles passed away on 24th February this year at the age of 75. His memory was honoured by QPR at the West Brom game, with each player coming out of the tunnel wearing the no.10 shirt in commemoration. The players were joined by Bowles family and friends and some of the players from the 76/77 season. It was obviously a very emotional time for the club. He remains a cult hero at Loftus Road and will always be remembered as "Stan the man".

Eh ?
After listening to the boro podcast opposition show with a QPR fan - dear o dear…..gonna be a long 90 minutes for boro today.
QPR are 9 unbeaten, 5 wins in there. Be very ready for a resounding defeat today unfortunately.
I pray 🙏🏻 I’m wrong but we’ve got to be realistic with ourselves.

We live in hope
A tough away game today though.
They were all over West Brom the other night.
I'd happily take the draw.
we always live in hope like I had written off the Leicester game but I still watched it and hey presto 😀 boro can actually surprise us from time to time.

9 points available in the next seven days!
Just imagine if..........
Wouldn’t it be just wonderful (!). Almost like winning the lottery (!) the same kind of joyous feeling like everything is well with the world (!) 🤣
That’s what boro does to us.

And 9 points we’d be very much breathing down the neck of 6th place!

Had a bit of a boost on the trains. Problems up north mean my train starts in York so is empty and early. Hope others on trains are ok. One Grand Central has been cancelled.

Feels like there is no game today. Train strangely lacking in Boro fans. No chatter on here. Has everyone gone to the seaside for the weekend?

* 12 different players have scored in the league for QPR this season, a total of 36 goals, conceding 48.

* Former Boro player Albert Adomah, now 36, has so far made 115 appearances for the "R"s since 2020.

Whilst not wishing to encourage gambling I will be taking a small financial interest in today's game backing a Boro win. At 2/1 we are priced too high.
We've scored 50 goals compared to their 36. If we can keep that leaky defence of ours tight and score first, the pressure will be on them.
It will be a battle. They are decent at set-pieces, but if we play at our best, we can just do it.
