* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Preston [02/24] Match-Day Thread *

Well that was underwhelming - so sorry for all those who travelled tonight and who keep putting themselves through this spending big money and using holidays from work. Lots of issues but top and what ultimately did the season in for me;
1. Not signing a striker in January
2. The crazy time our injured players are always out for - we don’t have a game or two absence with a knock we have months out when a player is injured is this because of Carrick and his back room teams Super cautious approach to bringing players back from injury. We wrap them in cotton wool on the bench for far too long. If they are fit get them in the bloody team as we desperately need them.
4. Substations - bizarre at times with 87th / 88th minute changes and his choice of change is garbage - Silvera for Greenwood tonight was 💩 for 💩.
Sadly the dismissive arrogant email about season ticket renewal on Monday finished things for me. I won’t be renewing and anybody who takes their customers passion and commitment for granted are on a slippery road to dark times. See you all later

We are the epitomy of "style over substance" right now. We are a very good footballing side, but the odd lapse at the back always seems to be punished and we are pretty toothless up top.
We'd get away with it in almost any 2nd tier in the world, but in the Championship there are teams who are far more efficient than most and they'll usually punish us.
Apparently Sunderland dominated tonight as well, but their lack of a striker cost them too.
Keep the bulk of this side and add a proper defensive midfielder and a decent striker or two and we'd be much better, but I'm not sure we have the finances to do it so we might have to settle for being easy on the eye as well as easy on the opposition.

I get what you are saying. Box to box we are brilliant but we aren’t clinical enough in one box and rugged enough in
The other. Sort that out and we’ll fly and 3 top signings will do that

Ipswich signed two strikers in the window, Moore and Al-Hamadi. They won 4.0 away. (y)
Hull loaned a striker in January and ge scored their winner against Rotherham. Set up by Giles, another loan.

Other teams have strengthened while we've weakened.

I don’t think it’s a deliberate decision to set up for next season, I think its been three specific issues that have combined badly:

Loss of last seasons loans led to an influx of players in the summer. They took longer than hoped to gel, leading to an awful start to the season.

The list of injuries have been the worst I can ever remember.

We couldn’t get a striker over the line in January, because other clubs knew we had the Rogers money and we weren’t prepared to be overcharged again.

It ought to bode well for next season, as we would hope to start with all of those things resolved, with Carrick comfortably established. But seeing it all slip away since the two cup defeats has been painful.

Have to keep positive. There’s no mileage in any other approach. Slating the players and seeking scapegoats won’t improve anything.

At this stage I have to wonder whether the main objective now is to get ourselves in a good position for next year.
I think it's fairly likely that was the objective at the start of the season to be fair.

I think we're in year 1 of a three year cycle, with last year effectively being a free-hit where we massively overperformed (don't forget we looked almost nailed on to go down when MC arrived).
