Hull Interim Head Coach, Andy Dawson, arrives in charge of a lowly Tigers outfit, following the sacking of German, Tim Walter. Walter managed just three wins from 18 games, leaving them third bottom of the Championship on 15 points. They are winless in five league games, achieving a solitary point against Portsmouth at home on November 2nd.
Dawson, a Northallerton lad, was "Caretaker" previously at Hull, for two months in 2022, before the arrival of Liam Rosenior. Rosenior was sacked in May, having delivered them to seventh place! Dawson knows the club well, having notched up 293 games in a ten-year career at the club. The previous Manager claimed he had a "philosophy", but Dawson is quoted in the Yorkshire Post [https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/football/-4888325] that he needs to "put an arm around" some of his charges. Let's hope that arm doesn't stretch too far and Hull can sort their own troubles out after Saturday!

Michael Carrick, has his own issues to deal with, firing up the lads, ready to get back to winning ways after that 1-0 defeat to Blackburn on Wednesday. For him:
It just wasn't quite there the other night. To lose a goal like we did, makes it even more disappointing. Sometimes you get performances like that and the boys [will be] looking to bounce back.
You have to use it as motivation...disappointment can fire you up, really. The boys have shown that over the last couple of days.
It's managing that little bit of the set-back and the disappointment really, taking [it] as a one-off game and getting that [winning] feeling back

A happy Ainsley Pears.
In his post-match interview, Carrick was visibly riled with their goal being given. In fact, most of his comments were about that goal:
We weren’t at our flowing best tonight. We've lost a game on an off-side goal. Clearly off-side, so that's so frustrating. We weren't at our best. We were the better team, but a draw's a draw if we didn’t lose it on an off-side goal. Its off-side.
It probably shows how well we've done of late, with the goals we've scored, and then tonight it wasn't quite there… A point would have been a point, but [for] the goal, that shouldn’t have been.
That set-back is history, but we have to quickly learn how to break down teams who come to shut us down. But we don't know what Hull are going to do, so there's an air of unpredictability and preparedness for the unexpected. Dawson said on his appointment that "getting back to basics" was his first and top priority. That sounds like every man knowing his job, close man-marking and shutting up shop to protect their goal. Who can blame them in their position? Expect Doak and Latte-Lath to have two players on them all game!
Carrick knows the experience of teams without Managers first-hand, both as a coach and as a player. At Manchester United, he played under six different Managers and was Caretaker himself for two months, before the Red Devils appointed Ralph Rangnick in December 2021. He knows that league position means nothing, and we know that too! Sometimes the league "doesn't lie" (!) or does it?
It doesn’t make it any easier, that's for sure. There's a little bit of [the] unknown. There's no getting away from that...which in some ways puts the focus on us a lot.
[I`ve] said it a few times. The league table doesn’t mean it's an easier game or a tougher game. It's proven to be the case all season and that's the way this league works, so [it's] very foolish to judge anything on that. It's what's in front of us. They've had a change of Manager and that can work in a number of ways, so we got to be ready…..to be super-positive ourselves really.

Let's get back to winning ways!
We have to put Wednesday behind us and carry on scoring those goals we've seen in recent games from all areas of the pitch. It's also important to remember the unsung heroes who don't get the headlines for hitting the back of the net. Ben Doak hit the woodwork the other night and Sol Brynn leapt on the ball in his area, which prevented them scoring in the first half. Azaz was conspicuous by his absence, which highlights just how much of a key player he has become. Riley McGree has been giving us that spark we have needed, but unfortunately had to go off with another injury. Tommy Conway had a quiet night, but is showing why he was worth the money. Barlaser and Howson have been invaluable whilst Hackney has been out, along with Aiden Morris. George Edmundson is showing why he was instrumental in helping Ipswich into the Premiership, and we still have others equally capable, waiting to return from injury or just for their chance off the bench. Relying on one player to be the main goalscorer can be dangerous, but like Carrick says:
It's what it takes, really, to share them out and everyone play their part. Throughout the season, some might go on a run more than others. It's sharing the load really and almost picking the time when we need them the most. Certainly, they've found the rhythm over the last few weeks, and we want to continue that run.
Time to get back that winning feeling........
Come On Boro !
