The tackle on (I think it was) McGree early in the first half,

accidental or not, I thought it was a shocker! Red card easily. Caught him thigh high.

Watching the stream, I couldn't believe how easily Maddo shrugged it off.

I'm surprised nobody else appears to have mentioned this. I'm looking for the full 90 replay to see it again.

Yeah itf it was premier league their is a very good chance that would of been a VAR intervention.

My first reaction was blimmin heck that was high and I thought it could of been a red card, however after watching the replay a couple of times I would say it was a yellow as his foot hit him in the stomach. Like Priv said I think if VAR had been in use it might of been referred to the referee to take another look.

It was just a yellow for me. As I recall, both feet were high and they were going for the ball, mcgree got the ball and a boot in the lower abdomen or nads, not sure where

Definitely a yellow.
Maddo thought it was a 50/50 and the ref was right to let it go, dunno what angle he saw it from,he is always asking fans for confirmation on incidents cos they often don't get to see a replay.

Not sure that kicking sometime in the stomach makes it any less of an offence.

I thought at the time, that if VAR were in use, that would very likely have been referred for on field review, with the outcome being a red card

As a former referee, I can assure you that from the standpoint of the laws, if a kick endangers an opponent it doesn't much matter where on the body you kick them.

I thought it should have been a red, but from the angle and distance i was from it could not be 100% and I may hold a little unconscious bias maybe. Ward being the ref didn’t help our cause.

Surprised this wasn't all over the forum at the time (which is why I kept my head down haha).

Looked a clear red in real time (and on replay). In the EPL that would get looked at (and in my opinion) result in a red card. Accidental or otherwise it was a horrific tackle.

The disparity between championship and prem for this sort of thing (not just the fact they have VAR but the standards are seemingly different) is perplexing at best.

Definitely a yellow.

To be fair, some of the tackles from Maddos day (which didn't result in play being stopped) would be straight reds now. Thankfully the game has moved on.

Looking back we didn't seem to get the key 50/50 decisions on Saturday.
Gavin Ward, nuff said really, Ward, Eltringham and Stroud are the 3 refs I always come away from a game feeling hard done by, even if we’ve won.

I also thought there was a naughty one on Rogers where the player played the ball but went over the top of it. He's was hurt but nobody else seemed bothered.

yeah, i remember that, it wasn't overly forceful but it was two feet and over the ball. I'm not sure he even gave a free kick?

Can anyone take a pic of it? I was thinking the same at the time, that the tackle was high but McGree came off worst and seemingly didn’t make a recovery until the last 10 mins of the game.

They just posted the full 90 on the boro site. It was Coulson, not McGree.

Regardless, it absolutely was a shocking tackle.Screenshot_20230809-144255_Middlesbrough FC.jpg
