Parts of these Carnyx trumpets have been found all over the Celtic world or on Roman artwork depicting conquered Celtic peoples. Remains have been found in norhtern Scotland and in southern France. They were used by warriors in battle, no doubt to scare the enemies and they would have made a really loud drone. When a reconstructed instrument was played on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh it turned heads 700m away near Holyrood Palace and that was over and above the sound of traffic. But it seems as they had a mouth piece and a vibrating tongue etc they could make very subtle, gentler sounds also. Listen Here
