The Right hijacking Christianity

Noticed this year a lot of right wing f*cktards desperately trying to turn Easter into a massive political point scoring exercise.

Can't recall this in previous years, everyone just got on with however they wanted to celebrate it.....or not. Each to their own, whatever makes them happy. Respect to all

Has this come copied directly from the bible bashing USA right (MAGA).....which is scary. Or is it sheer desperation, trying to paint themselves as wholesome pious Christians, good god fearing people...... shamelessly trying to win votes?

I'm an atheist, but if I were a Christian I wouldn't be impressed with this behaviour.

They’re appealing to the faux Christian patriots in this oh so Christian country…
Nowt better to rally the masses behind god king and country…

I think it's both. As we know, the Right will confect a Culture War out of virtually anything these days. Bereft of plausible ideas all they can do is channel identity-based indignation. At the same time, the Right's playbook is copied, deliberately, from country to country. As I mentioned on another thread recently, the the London-based think-tank the IEA coordinates a network of similar bodies in every major nation across the world.

Yes. Yes it has. The last five years of tory tactics are taken directly from the US MAGA neo-con evangelical play-book, since they are merely paid stooges for the US far-right.

It isn't working though is it, save on a small group of bigots and racists and I think even they realise how ridiculous the fake Christianity thing is. There is no evangelical base to appeal to in the heathen UK. Although I half-expect Reece-Mogg to pop up on GBeebies selling Union Jack Bibles.

Reece-Mogg would sell Union Jack condoms if he thought he could make a few quid out of it (without paying tax, obvs).

Well Rees-Mogg is a strict ant-abortion Catholic, similar to Steve Bannon, and it's an interesting thing this interface between reactionary Catholicism and evangelical Protestantism. Reactionary forces in general - Putin, Modi, Trump, Bolsanaro, Erdogan, Iran, Saudi - are everywhere powered by religious conservatism. They go hand in glove; that's why the likes of Putin and the right-wing Press in the UK cynically seek to exploit it even when non-believers. Of reactionary powers, only China is an outlier that it does not seek to directly channel religion, but even there, Confucianism is increasingly referenced, serving the function of an ancient national edifice of morality, akin to a religion.

They've been hijacking Christianity for years, since the days of the KKK, the confederacy, the BNP, the national front, the EDL. They used it as a vehicle to spout hatred, without actually practicing Christianity and probably haven't entered a church in years.

It's mad that the far right think Jesus, is their bargaining chip, or something to hijack. You know, apparently the long haired, dark skinned, immigrant bloke who was born in a barn and as woke as they come, way ahead of his time.

The far right would absolutely hate Jesus, he would be about as much of a lefty as they come, and if he was real and around now he would practically certain to be green, best mates with Corbyn and Greta, and taking the knee at any and every opportunity.
