When we went decimal in 1971 first class postage was 3p, the equivalent today is 43p. But the new rate is 85p. Ouch.

Yes other than birthday cards I can’t remember the last time I sent a letter.

Same here. Birthday and Christmas cards and the occasional cheque.
To be fair we do live in a remote location but first class mail rarely arrives the next day. My cousin sent me a birthday card with money in it from Teesside to here in the Scottish Borders, first class recorded delivery. Postmarked the 16th, it arrived on the 29th.

1st class does usually arrive next day. If it didn't I couldn't continue with fanzine subscriptions. But this massive rise in price has come out of the blue, mid-season. I wonder what consequences it will have for so many traders that have already set their prices. It could easily be the last straw for some traders. It is such a big difference.
