THE PREMIER LEAGUE DIVIDE

Some talk going on about should we go up this season? on the basis that Fulham who are top dogs at the moment are light years ahead of anyone else in this league and they got tortured week in week out in the premier league. Well and truly battered.. then thoughts obviously turn to our last foray into the Premier League and how we went down without a fight. Embarrassing right? For the record I think if we had Isiah Jones fit, that difference would have been enough to see us over the top against Fulham. With the full squad as it is now from the start of the season.. I see in an automatic promotion place with not much between us an Fulham.

To the premier league.. for starters Chris Wilder has been there before and he didn't look out of place. As with previous seasons I do think we will see a change out with players coming to the end of contracts, long term injuries or younger players looking for regular game time. I though I'd have a look at where we went last time round an thought I could speculate as to what the equivalents might be this time round, who we might be looking at or at the very least the calibre or player we would be looking to bring in just to equal the effort we made last time round.

Valdez - Free - Andre Onana - Ajax- Free Dean Henderson would be the obvious choice here Onana has Valdez level hype and baggage (also free.. and off to inter)

Barragan - £3m - Mason Holgate - Everton - ££ Everton look set to go down we may see a bargain to be had, Jack Stephens - Southampton out of contract too

Chambers - Loan - Rhys Williams -Liverpool - Loan Like Holgate 'Rhys Williams' sounds like a player we should have on our books

Espinosa - Free - Kristian Pedersen - Birmingham - Free The left sided central defender, we looked at Jack Simpson in the summer and we might well go back

Traore - Swap - Ben Johnson - West Ham - Free Festy Ebosele from Derby/Udinese/Watford? Vinicius Tobias now at Real? Need something different to our star man imo

Guedioura - £4.5m - Imrân Louza - Watford ££ The random no show from Watford? Surely we can do better and grab a bargain from another relegated club?

De Roon - £10m - Sander Berge - Sheffield Utd - £££ I was massively impressed with Sander Berge, if they don't go up and we do.. surely deserves a tinkle?

Fisher - £3.8m - John Joe Patrick Finn - Getafe B - Free The unproven wonderkid! and why not JJPF is yet another of the Irish wonderkids setting chins to wag.

Fabio - £2m - Darnell Furlong - West Brom - £ Under rated, under the radar, fine squad signed turned boy done well again vital successful component player

Negredo - Loan - Luka Jovic - Loan Well if Everton currently lead the race to sign him.. I'd fancy our chances. Madrid are willing to send him on loan.

Gestede - £6m - Ben Brereton Diaz - Blackburn Blackburn owe us a decent striker, do we keep throwing money at them until they pay out?

Guzan - Free - Fraser Forster - Southampton - Free I know right! Comparing Brad Guzan to Fraser Forster.. ah well contract is out in the summer.

Ramirez - Free - Divock Origi - Liverpool - Free The unpredictable prem quality, why is he on a free stop start flawed genius.

Bamford - £5.5m - Viktor Gyokeres - Coventry - ££ Karanka said he liked Bamford, Wilder said he liked Gyokeres.. both young and blond.

Trying to come up with a team equivalent to the turgid shambles that was our last Premier league campaign is a bit of a strange thing :) . But I do know what you are saying.

Looking at who we have already, then I reckon:-

Fry, McNair, Tav & Jones - Good enough to play in the Prem

Dijksteel, Bola, Crooks, Watmore - Squad members

Howson - Age must catch up with him at some point, but he is in great form and should be signed up and used as a squad member

Payero, McGree - I don't feel I know enough about, but they are both new signings for us and they will be in the squad.

Coburn - The great hope that MFC academy have finally produced a decent striker. Still very early days. Squad member, if he keeps doing his thing.

So we add:-

1 good GK, and keep best of rest as backup.

1 good DC

1 good LB

1 good MC because Howson cannot go on forever.

2 good strikers

6 new players - I have no idea how much that will cost. Plus keep the best of what we have already.

It's quite fun to think about, but if we only get a draw and a loss in our next two games, all this will be irrelevant.

Regardless of results we’ll still need to revamp the squad.. not even sure how different the players we will be looking at will be. The pull of the premier league certainly opens doors for us. Two loan players in the prem vs a potential five in the championship.

The areas we need to strengthen will still be the areas we will need to strengthen. I can see Fry and Tavernier playing in the prem next season, maybe McNair too!

Fulham have scored 93 goals this season, against Boro's 52. That's an extra goal per game. I accept Wilder has done a good job with the team he inherited although Connolly and Balogun have been poor, and he brought them in.

I'd say Boro would need 8 new players to get anywhere near a 100 goal season. Tavernier, Jones and Fry, possibly McNair could form a new team, but the rest have to go.

I just don't see the resources to bring in 8 new players and reserves so Boro are not going to dominate like Fulham.

Five of those 8 could be loaned in players.. plus there will be loads of decent free transfers knocking about.
