WOW! Just WOW!

Whats not to say about that top class performance against the Blades at Bramall Lane on Wednesday? Surely our best performance [so far] this season? Its getting that every game breaks new barriers, our players show more and more what they are capable of as individuals and a team. The never-say-die spirit pervades all areas of our play and the connect between us fans and the boys on the pitch an Michael Carrick - is just magic. To use a Michael Carrick quote "lets not get carried away" - but lets enjoy every moment. Its no exageration to say this team is playing football like no-other Boro side for years! Its a joy to watch.

Its more difficult every game to pick a "Man of The Match"; on Wednesday they all deserved it. Zak made some crucial saves, Chuba added to his 17 goal tally, Cameron Archer is Flippin magic (!), Riley McGree gets better every game and Hayden Hackney is just fantastic. We made Sheffield United look ordinary - their bustling, physical [Championship style] approach was outclassed by our one-touch football.

We looked like a Premier side who had dropped in to a football jumble sale and left with the match ball and three valuable points. They couldnt cope. Apart from the freebie we gifted them at the beginning, we choked the life out of them. Our fans were magnificent. Even if we just watched it on the box - all you could hear was Boro chants and encouragement for the full 90!

It was pleasing to see Paul Heckingbottom hit the target more than his forwards - being sent off the touchline for hoofing the second refs score-board. By the time our second one bust the back of the net, the Bramall Lane "faithful" were leaving in droves. Those who talked themselves up before we arrived - were left knowing they had been well and truly spanked.

The deficit from third to second is now only seven points! Despite them having a game in hand, they have a cup game coming up against Spurs and a tricky trip to Millwall [Come on agent Duncan!]. But we will do what Carrick insists we always do and focus on our own game. Is it too early to mention the "P" word? Who knows? But maybe we can catch Blades and....................?!!!!😁

Michael Carrick.

"Its a pleasure to stand on the touch-line and watch the team at work.........celebrating wins like that with the supporters is priceless"

The QPR Media Conference was buzzing on Thursday. Carrick said "There`s no hiding what the situation is. we knew before the game, we know now and for the rest of the season. But its not something I think about an awful lot. I enjoyed last night for what it was; for the performance, for the challenge that the boys faced and came through. I was really proud of them for that." As usual, Carrick took no credit for the performance, but acknowledged the feel-good factor amongst supporters and the team: "I fully appreciate the situation we`re in at the moment and the feeling around the whole place and the support we`re getting". But its what happens next (?). "Its the only way I kind of know" said Carrick. Asked about his own career and whether that influences his approach, he repeated "I think experience is a wonderful thing". Good or bad. He highlighted his experience of relegation at West Ham and how that helped to develop him as a player.

QPR?
[It will be] "a dangerous game. They`ve had a tough run of results....they`ve got really good individuals, that can come alive at any time and hurt you." As for the lads being ready after the Blades: "Physically...from the game [Wednesday] night, we`l manage that and be ready, mentally - even more so. Be ready to do it all over again and start from scratch". He emphasised the importance of being focused on QPR and not letting "the victory drift" - "its about concentrating and living for the moment". For Michael Carrick the priority is keeping our eye on the ball and feet on the ground.

Most rewarding part of the job [so far]?

"Its a pleasure to stand on the touch-line and watch the team at work".
"Seeing the players and the supporters connect and have that atmosphere. Players playing well with a smile on their face. [Players] wanting to come into work every day and wanting to be here. You can see it in them. Its camararderie....you know. Celebrating wins like that with the supporters is priceless.".
"Its that drive to still want to get better"
. We have to be humble enough to understand whats happening. We`ve been on a good run, but we still need to improve.
"If you dont try, its never gonna work". We can realistically expect the players to step up and produce even better performances and results.

1676655186945.png

Cameron Archer?
What of his performance and his attitude?
"I think [it comes] from the people he`s mixing with. He`s a fantastic talent and has a willingness to learn. To see him smiling was fantastic. He`s got a freshness about him. Hes a terrific lad."

Aaron Ramsey?
"I thought he stepped in great" - for his brief appearance as sub on Wednesday night. That is praise indeed from a man of Carricks acheivements and stature [but he wont admit it].

Hayden Hackney?
"I`de say he goes about his business quietly, but everyone is recognising how good he`s been playing." carrick continued how Hackney has been pushing himself in training, doing extra and working on his own to improve his game. Carrick said he liked that in a player. "He just does what hes good at and thats what I love to see". Hackney has no arrogance and is never "in your face", according to our Head Coach.

Zak?
"The first thing I said to him after the game....he made a couple of big(!) big(!) saves for us. He certainly stepped up when we needed him".

So, its on to QPR. Our next challenge. There will, no doubt, be a big crowd - it appears to be swelling game-by-game. Its going to be an electric atmosphere, but we wont be complacent. After that performance on Wednesday, can we get better? Its an exciting time to be a Boro fan [Not often we can say that]! Its a joy to watch our team play. More of the same tomorrow please........

Come on! Lets get behind the lads again.
Lets shorten that points gap to second place and who knows what will happen next?

Up The Mighty Boro!

Boro: won 10, lost 2, 26 GF, 12 GA
QPR: won 1, drawn 5, lost 6, 7 GF, 21 GA

Quite staggering they have only scored 7 in 12 games and we have scored nearly 4x as many.

Match Preview:

Middlesbrough’s hopes of achieving automatic promotion were kept alive by a stunning 3-1 comeback victory at second-placed Sheffield United last time out. Not only did Boro defy the odds to win in front of the Sky cameras, it also confirmed Michael Carrick as the best performing Boro boss ever after 16 league games (W12, D1, L3), surpassing the late great Jack Charlton - a man who saw Boro promoted to the top-flight back in 1973/74.

Next on Carrick’s agenda is to end Boro’s terrible winless run in H2Hs against Queens Park Rangers (D3, L4), including three straight home defeats therein. The Teessiders are at a rather short price to end that run and probably for good reason, as they’ve won as many home league games across the last five (W5), as they did in the 15 outings prior (D5, L5).

Unfortunately for QPR, a 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland in midweek extended their winless run to ten games (D5, L5) in a result which was especially frustrating after the Hoops missed a potentially equalising penalty. Deflated QPR boss Neil Critchley says his team don’t “lack heart or desire” but that clearly hasn’t been enough to stop their slide into the bottom-half of the table.

Playing away from home is unlikely to provide the Rs with any respite, as they’ve won just one of their last nine away league games (D4, L4) and none since Critchley’s first game in charge. Making a quick start may prove key to stopping the rot, with QPR unbeaten when scoring first (W5, D1), yet winless when conceding the opener (D2, L6), in away league games this season.

FOLLOWING what has been a tough few weeks for QPR, boss Neil Critchley will be aiming for a return to winning ways on Saturday as we prepare for the long trip north to face Middlesbrough in this Sky Bet Championship clash.

Having picked up just one victory from our last 16 games, this form has seen Rangers slipping to 17th in the league table. And the R’s wrap up what has been a busy week with a trip to Teesside on Saturday, having suffered back-to-back defeats to Millwall and Sunderland in W12 respectively. Therefore, a trip to the Riverside Stadium will give Critchley’s men the perfect opportunity to right some recent wrongs with our recent record at the home of Boro a cause for optimism – with Rangers picking up 3 victories from all their last 3 visits to Teesside. However, the Super Hoops come up against a Middlesbrough side now managed by former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and having picked up an impressive victory over fellow promotion candidates Sheffield United earlier in the week will be full of confidence heading into this one.

Pre-match Talk

Neil Critchley (QPR head coach): “My focus is on our team and what we can do to improve.
1676660940198.png
“If you look at the start of the Sunderland game, I didn’t see a team devoid of confidence and energy, we must be better in certain moments, when teams have possession in certain areas. It’s about recognising those moments and understanding how we’re going to get through them.
“Middlesbrough got a fantastic result in midweek at Sheffield United and we couldn’t face a more difficult task away from home.”

Classic Encounter

After an impressive start to the 2021/22 Sky Bet Championship campaign, QPR faced the long trip to the Riverside Stadium, which ultimately saw ten-men QPR clinching all three points on Teesside courtesy of an own-goal from Jonny Howson, an effort from Lyndon Dykes and a winner from Chris Willock. In a breathless encounter in the North East, QPR trailed at half-time following Uche Ikpeazu’s early penalty. However, the Super Hoops would find the net three times after the interval to take as many points back to west London. Howson’s 48th-minute own goal gave Rangers a helping hand and, despite having Moses Odubajo sent off for a second booking shortly after, Dykes added an R’s second on 56 minutes. Hosts Boro would then equalise through Matt Crooks in the 72nd minute but it would be the visitors’ night, with the impressive Willock smashing home in the 76th-minute with the deciding goal.

Incredibly, this was the first time that the R’s had strung five away league wins in a row together since 1927 – following an impressive end to the 2020/21 campaign and victory over Hull City just three days earlier. I always dread playing a team on a bad run of results (it has to end) and equally feel confident playing a team on a long winning or unbeaten run (again, it has to end).
So I was initially concerned about this one and QPR have some talented players, but then I saw the thread about our recent form against them and again..IT HAS TO END!
This is a different Boro, the points tally is impressive, the league position great, but the football, as Roofie says, is a joy to watch.
The boys are having fun and I'm expecting them to keep rolling on.
