Its that time again>>>>>
It was three days after his first match in charge that Michael Carrick took his "team" to Hull City`s MKM Stadium on the first Tuesday in November. He had literally just got his coat on the peg behind his door, when he set off on the road. Boro had won only one game away all season up till then: 4-1 at Wigan - with Leo bravely holding the team together.
It was a spirited performance, like letting a spring loose: the lads played with a kind of fluency and self expression we hadnt seen all season. Akpom scored from an exquisite pass by Tommy Smith. Jones [going down the wing- a ha!] was out wide and played an important role dragging Hull defenders all over the place.
Cyrus Christie [remember him?] levelled in the second half, but after that the Carrick Copter went into overdrive and minutes later Darragh Lenihan had the ball in the Tigers net.
Smiles all around.
No one could predict that this was to be the start of a rocket ride up the table to the dizzy heights of potential automatic promotion. Our fans that night drowned out any noise from the Tigers end. It was a pulsating match. Ten minutes before the end and Giles sealed the deal. 3-1 Boro!
Although Carrick had just started his first Head Coach position since leaving Man United - he had started to spread his magic dust over a group of players who had - untill then - looked a busted flush. He hadnt had time to imbue the lads with his sense of calm, perseverance and determination, but it was clear the shoots of success had already begun to take root.
The core of the starting line-up has become familiar. We have, of course, added Archer and Ramsey, but with a few tweaks and variations on a theme.
Starting Line - Up: Steffen. Smith. Lenihan. Fry. Giles. Howson. Jones. McGree. Hackney. Akpom. Forss.
Subs: Hoppe. Crooks. Mowatt. Roberts. McNair. Dijksteel. Muniz.
Three valuable points! Boro were still only a point above 22nd place. But we were never to visit the depths of the Championship relegation zone again. The Red Revolution had begun.
Carrick spoke to BBC Tees after the match:
"I'm pleased for the boys and the feeling and the lift that will give them. They deserved that for the week they've given me and how they've gone about it.
"I thought we played some really good football at times. We'd like to do more of it for longer periods but there were definitely glimpses we can take positives from.
"But all in all, a really good night with lots of parts of the performance that we can be proud of."
