EFL Championship. Saturday 10th August 2024. Boro v Swansea at The Riverside. KO 1230 hrs [GMT].

A massive welcome back to the new season. Despite the Euro`s and the Olympics, the arrival of the new football season can never be beaten, for excitement, hope and anticipation. New kit and new faces; time to make a fresh start, build on the positives from last season and carry on the momentum where we left off at the end of 23/24. Summer has been a busy time for Michael Carrick, the Recruitment Team, the club and all the staff:

* With Luke Ayling signing early doors.
* McGree signing a new contract.
* Aidan Morris arriving from over the pond.
* Darragh Lenihan getting game time pre-season.
* Law McCabe stepping up to the Senior squad.
* Big Delano Burgzorg signed on a four-year contract.
* Sonny Finch has deservedly stepped up to the Senior squad.
* Young Finlay Cartwright signed his first pro contract in June at the age of 17. The Redcar lad looks set for a good future.
* Mica Hamilton signed today [Friday] from Manchester City, for a reported £4M. Apparently, he scored his first Senior goal for Citeh against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League (!).
* Not forgetting that Michael Carrick also signed a new contract!

Compared to some other clubs, our ins and outs have been few in comparison. Later on in "The Magic Roundabout" there is a selective glance at some of the other clubs and summer transfer and loan activity across the Championship. There is an appreciation of Swansea Manager Luke Williams, plus his hopes for the season and how he views his first game of the season. There is an appraisal of Michael Carricks thoughts on the new season, the question of how many coloured jumpers he has in his wardrobe, our record against the Swans, key facts and figures, a view from the Swans fans, comment on predictions about Boro`s hopes for the season, and many more features, including player profiles, historical facts and features throughout the season, stats, league trends and tables, and much more.

No doubt there will be lots of differing opinions along the way, through the ups and downs of forty-six Championship games, the FA and Carabao Cup's, possible play-offs (?), injuries, International Breaks, the price of tickets, whether it was a penna or not, are Sunlun really our "rivals", who is in or out of "favour", newspaper talk and speculation!

Cant wait!

Come On Boro!

Michael Carrick

Carrick conference.png

[Notes from his most recent Media Conference]

We feel we are in a good place, without getting carried away. I think we've got everything right. We’re certainly excited, and we're positive about the [new] season!

Carrick is convinced that his team and the coaches have a better understanding of each other going into the season. Commenting on the same period last year, he asserted:

I think there's a stability and consistency within the group now, added [players] to it a little bit, and feel like we strengthened [the team] in a good way. The boys kind of know what to expect of each other.

Certainly, there is a core to the team which has been together now long enough to know what's expected of them. Growing together as a unit reflects Carrick's philosophy, and he relies on “trust” both on the pitch and off it.

I'm really happy with the group we've got. I've said it for a number of weeks now. I think the way we've strengthened and been together for quite some time, we feel like we've grown together, and we're better now. So I'm happy the way things are and, if we can improve, then even better.

He is particularly confident that younger players will have a better chance of playing a large part in the coming season. Certainly, the reliability on loan players in key positions has decreased, and the club has more of a plan moving forward, rather than what Carrick describes as the “constant churn” of a revolving door:

We try to develop the group in general and the club moving forward. [We know] the type of player that we're looking for and the balance of the group…..credit to Steve Gibson, Kieran Scott and Neil Bausor in terms of helping and backing that and, believing in [the plan] and working together.

There is no uncertainty about the new players fitting in to the group and the style of play Carrick desires. He acknowledges the situation last season, where players from abroad, unfamiliar with the league, took some time to settle in. From pre-season, it looks like we have some exciting youngsters coming through, and the new boys have looked very promising. The big test starts against Swansea!

Carrick on his New Contract at the beginning of June* :

carrick jumper.png

"It feels like a big step. A statement" said Carrick. Also having trust in the club and those around him, and "being in it for all the right reasons". He said he relies a lot on his "instinct" and "gut feelings" and knew Boro were the right club with which to continue to build a successful team.

"Being in the North East and growing up in the North East, there's certainly a big attraction for me".

Swansea Manager: Who is Luke Williams?

williams russell.png
Luke Williams is no amateur when it comes to coaching and tactics, having worked alongside Tim Sherwood, Russell Martin, Gus Poyet and Lee Power. He turned to coaching the youth teams at Leyton Orient and West Ham, having sustained a career-ending knee injury, aged only 19. His circuitous journey saw him first work at Swansea with Russell Martin in 2021, but he moved on to Head Coach with then National League Notts County in June 2022.

He turned around a side struggling to achieve any consistency, bringing in the likes of Macaulay Langstaff, Cedwyn Scott and Jodie Jones, achieving promotion back to the Football League in the Play-Off Final at Wembley in 2023.
williams langstaff.png

It was at the turn of the year in January 2024 he took over as Head Coach at Swansea in the Championship. The Swans were floundering and at one point looking relegation candidates. Williams plays an attacking, possession-based game. He likes to use wingers and plays feet-to-the-floor. He managed to coach Macaulay Langstaff to achieve a record 41 goals in 41 games in his first season at County. Not one of those was a penalty!

Williams can get the best out of players, but if he has one weakness it is in defence: he relies heavily on attack, and his teams have tended to play like scoring five up front whilst leaking three at the back!

His approach at the Swans last season, was to manage with what he had, knowing there was little money in the kitty and a demoralised squad which needed organising, playing to their strengths. He tightened up defence and eventually finished 14th in the Championship, by which time the candidates for relegation were well and truly entrenched at the bottom of the table.

Over the summer, the likes of Nathan Ogbeta and Przemyslaw Lpatcheta departed on free transfers, whilst former Boro starlet Nathan Wood left for a reported £3.5M to newly promoted Southampton in the Premier League.

natan wood.png
Meanwhile, former Derby County loanee Jerry Yates was signed permanently, and Centre – Forward Zan Vipotnik arrived on a free transfer from Bordeaux. Also in the fold is former Burnley Goalkeeper Lawrence Voigouroux and Goncalo Franco from Moreirense in Portugal.

Williams side is composed mainly of players in the early to mid-twenties, with a few old heads in the mix. Current average age of the side is 23 years and 9 months.

Not always pretty to watch, his defensive style frustrates the opposition, but he might find it more difficult to stick to that ethos with some tougher and better equipped teams in the Championship this season. Williams aims high, but realistically, this is a rebuild season for the Swansea outfit. He maybe looking towards breaking into the top ten, but It's going to be hard work for the Londoner in South Wales.

Luke Williams: We want to be ready to go toe to toe with anyone

Head coach Luke Williams insists Swansea City enter the new Championship campaign ready to go toe to toe with all comers as they get set for the big kick-off at Middlesbrough on Saturday (12.30pm).

The Swans travel to the Riverside at the outset of Williams’ first full season in charge, having overseen a positive conclusion to the 2023-24 campaign.
They face a Boro side fancied by many to be among the promotion contenders,

“We have expectations as a group. The players expect me to prepare them to go toe to toe, and I expect them to not be afraid of anyone,” said the Swans boss.

“We have a mutual respect between staff and players and that is how we are approaching the season.

“I hope we have improved from where we were last season, I know that might not be the most exciting answer you have ever heard, but I really hope we have improved and people can see that.

“That is what I would like to hear the supporters say, that they recognise the group is moving forward in a positive direction and that they feel optimistic and excited about the team.

“If we have that, we will know we are on the right track.

"We have young guys, and it would be great to see some real optimism that this group can grow together and become a really good Championship team.

Luke Williams

“We want to do better, and it’s also about the way we do it.

“We want to play consistently well. Sometimes you can be more or less fortunate in football, we know that is a reality, but we want to play at a higher level consistently.”

The Swans have been put through their paces during a gruelling pre-season, and Williams has praised the efforts of his squad.
And, whatever follows in the months ahead, he is clear that no-one should be questioning the attitude and application of his squad.

“It is impossible to question how hard the players are working, and have worked, during pre-season,” he added.

“It is impossible to question whether this group is ambitious, I will not accept anybody saying anyone here is going through the motions or not committed to the club.

“I won’t accept anybody saying the players are not being worked hard by myself and the staff.

"Whether we are a brilliant team, or an entertaining team or what anyone wants to say because everyone has a different view, those parts are not in doubt."

The Championship Football Magic Roundabout!

Magic roundabout pic.png

Summer is certainly a hectic time for the Championship, in terms of changing personnel in the Manager's chair and the dressing rooms. We are going to come up against some familiar faces, wearing different shirts this season: Danny Batth has joined Blackburn from Norwich........
Ben Gibson.png
Ben Gibson has joined the Potters and Sam Greenwood is now a “North – ender” with Preston, on loan from Leeds. Burnley have sold Arijanet Muric to Ipswich for £15M and Hull have received £18M for the sale of Jeden Philogene to Aston Villa. Does anyone know where Ryan Giles is, by the way? Hull prized him from Luton, but he was rumoured to be wanting a return to the Riverside?
Chambers.png
Ex Boro loanee Callum Chambers has joined Cardiff and Ben Osborn, once of Forest and Sheffield United, has joined our friends Derby County. West Brom have no less than seventeen players off their rosta! Careful to balance the books, Connor Townsend transferred to newly promoted Ipswich for £500K, whilst the likes of Adam Reach and Matt Philips are free agents. It's ten years since we loaned Nathan Challabah from Chelsea, but the 29-year-old has travelled far and wide during that time and will be adorning the shirt of Sheffield Wednesday, who spectacularly saved themselves from “certain” (?!) relegation last season.
Chalobah.png
Talking of Sheffield, Chris Wilder has literally emptied the bomb doors to the old guard at Bramley Lane, who successfully broke all records making a complete mess of last season in the Premiership.
wilder.png1723224307577.png
He has brought in Kieffer Moore from Bournemouth and Callum O`hare from Coventry, amongst others. But his biggest acquisition is Danish Forward, William Osula, for £15M from Newcastle. Formerly a Blade, it appears he is returning home for a second go!

langstaff millwall.png
Just a mention about Millwall and their capture of Macaulay Langstaff at £700K from Notts County. A big step-up for only his second season in the Football League at 27, but he could turn out to be the Championship top scorer come next May. Portsmouth and Oxford will be interesting opponents this season, after both have been absent from the second tier for some time. Pompey has imported experienced players like Jordan Archer, Andre Dozzell and Matt Ritchie.

Ritchie.pngwill vaulks to oxford.png
Oxford have relied on free transfers to bolster their squad, including Will Vaulks, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday, and Platecha from Swansea.

Finally, not forgeting our “rivals” up the road, who have four new players in on a free, whilst nineteen have either been released or out on loan. They have at last signed new Manager, Regis Le Bris!
Good luck to him!

Welcome Boro`s Newest Signing!

Micah Hamilton.

Earlier Today [Friday], Micah Hamilton arrived from Manchester City for a reported £4M`s on a four-year contract!
He began his "career" in football with Manchester City at the age of 9 and plays as either an attacking midfielder or winger. He made his Senior debut last December in the UEFA Champions League, away at Red Star Belgrade: scoring City's first on 19th minutes, in their 3-2 win in the last group stage.
So far, he has five England Youth Caps: 3 [U16`s] 2 [U20`s].

This is an edit of the match report from The Guardian on 13th December 2023:

Micah Hamilton sparks Manchester City win at Red Star Belgrade

Whatever else Micah Hamilton achieves in his career, it will glisten with the honeyed memory he created 19 minutes into his Manchester City debut here.

Running in from the right, the 20-year-old elite development squad captain collected a Matheus Nunes ball and, from a tight angle, smashed past Omri Glazer. It sent Hamilton into ecstasy and racing for a corner of the Rajko Mitic Stadium, where the boy from Crumpsall, who joined the club as an under-nine, was mobbed by Nunes, Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips and the other stellar names in City’s XI.

“I was delighted to score on my debut. It still hasn’t sunk in yet - still I’m taking it in,” Hamilton said.

In a match of zero jeopardy thanks to City already being in Monday’s draw for the knockout phase as Group G winners, it was a delightful moment, Hamilton’s finish prompting pictures on social media of him six years ago taking instructions as a ballboy from Pep Guardiola during a match against Crystal Palace.

1723226421589.png
The manager, having forgotten the interaction, was shown an image. “I didn’t know,” he said. “Six years ago? Wow. What a goal, eh! I’m so happy for him. He’s training quite often with us, we saw his skills up front 1-v-1, and he made a fantastic goal and penalty.” (*)

* [What a recommendation!!!]

Boro 2 Swansea 0

Emanuel Latte-Lathe bagged a goal in each half to give us the three valuable points.
It was the final game of the regular season. After a very poor start, we put together a tremendous unbeaten run in the latter half of the season, but it was just that little too late.
